Anyone been to the dinner4two presentation? Read my experience (not good)

As an update, after my rant on Facebook (the first time I've logged in to that waste of time in probably a year) the President of the company emailed me saying he is mailing me a pair of some of their best knives. Will this change my view of his company? Probably not as I am the type of consumer that will not go back to a company that I've had a bad experience with, especially the first time before I've purchased anything at all. But it's a nice gesture and we'll see...

first here is there site:

Dinner4two.ca

Testimonials say they've had their products for 24 years.

WHOIS shows the site was registered on 2010/09/02 24 years must fly pretty quickly for some people... No other info was listed.

The rest

Alright, my fiancée went to a wedding show recently and I was unable to attend due to work. I didn't really want to go because I told her all it was going to be was people trying to sell you expensive overpriced stuff.

Anyways she told me she got a phone call from a dinner4two.ca rep saying we won a 2 night trip or our choice of wedding bands, regardless of price. The only catch was we had to sit through a 2 hour presentation. I told her we won't get anything unless we buy something...

So we get there and a guy was talking to us and 2 Other couples that were also there asking what we do and whatnot.

We go in and a woman who seemed nice at first had a demonstration of all this cookware that seemed really good. The woman was a little reluctant to tell me the manufacturer (hmm, I wonder why) at the end but she did (forget who it is now).

Here's where I thought the products may be of inferior quality: she said a few times that the company does not advertise their products or sell them in mainstream media/stores, they do this so they can keep their prices low and give away trips

I was contemplating on maybe buying a small set to replace some of the older stuff until se wrote the "suggested price" of the 10 piece set for (wait for it) $4999.90+tax+shipping.

I kind of laughed to myself when she said "but wait, if you buy today you'll get 40% off and pay only $2999.90".

After explaining the price, she talks about the warranty, saying its not a limited warranty it's a 50 year warranty, I asked twice in different ways what was NOT covered. She would tiptoe around the question and go on to what was covered again. Apparently all scratches were covered so I asked, if I drop a cookware piece by accident or bend a fork or spoon by accident then it's covered? She said if its a scratch you have to be able to feel it with your nail, if its a bend it needs to be a manufacturer defect. I then asked but I thought it was covered regardless because that's what you said 5 minutes ago. She said well you can't use a pot as a hammer. (Seriously).

As she was talking to all of us at the end of the presentation se asked if I was interested, I told her that I can't afford to drop $3000ish on a 10 piece cookware set because I am looking to buy a house and pay for a good poison of the wedding.

Here is where I got a little angry. She had the nerve to say "you can't afford $30 a week? Do you smoke? Go to the casino? Etc?"

I replied "yes I do all of those things, but I am not looking at the weekly cost of $30 for 3 years, I'm looking at the full cost. I could buy about 6 full sets right now if I wanted to but I'm not throwing that much money at anything without researching the products first"

Then she says "if you can't afford $30/week them how do you expect to pay for a wedding and a house, why did you come?"

I was pissed at this point and said "thank you for insulting a potential customer that may have bought something until you tarted to question my finances, you can be sure the company will hear about this as well as your company's Facebook page and other sites as well as the insane prices." She said there is the door, bye (and handed me the 2 night trip voucher (which can only be used Sunday-Wednesday)

I left and told my fiancée "I told you this is what it was going to be". I wasn't mad that we went I just knew it was going to be something like that. I'm sorry but who in their right mind pays $3000 for a 10 piece cookware set. I feel sorry for anyone who gets suckered into the "it's only $30/week for 3 years.

The funny thing is, all those payments add up to $4320 after 3 years, not including the 2% interest which you apparently get back in a gift card.

Short form:

Went to a demo of cookware
Find out it was possible to bake a cake on a stove?
Get asked to pay $3000 for a 10 piece cookware set (btw the $1500 set didn't even have a frying pan)
Get insulted when I say I can't afford to spend $3000 on cookware since saving for wedding and house
Left with 2 night stay (choosing Niagara Falls)

Does anyone else have experiences with this show?

Also if you get called for this. Unless you are insane enough to spend $3000 on cookware, don't bother going. Spend maybe $1000 or around there for some really nice stuff. Maybe it's because I'm 26 and am doing a strict budget...

ADDED:

I found the manufacturer is royal prestige and the warranties are not what they claim at all, they have poor customer service and the products are nothing like how they are explained

Here is a link with many posts saying how poor of a company they are

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowne ... stige.html

Also, I am no longer easy to persuade to spend my money, not like I was 4+ years ago. I will also be putting my review on their Facebook page and if it gets deleted I will put it on there again, this is mainly because of the woman insulting me about my finances but I can guarantee I make 2x what she makes per month.

Thanks for the warning.
Who on average would spend that much, always reminds me of this....

Lady: Do you smoke?
Man: Yes.
Lady: How many packs?
Man: 3 packs daily.
Lady: How much is per pack for your brand?
Man: $ 8 a pack.
Lady: And how long have you been smoking?
Man: Almost 18 years.
Lady: So one pack costs $ 8 and you have 3 packs a day which puts your spending each month at $ 720. In one year, it would be $ 8640. Correct?
Man: Correct.
Lady: If in 1 year you spend $ 8640, you collectively spent $ 155,520. Correct?
Man: Correct.
Lady: Do you know that if you hadn't smoked, that money could have been put in a step-up interest savings account and after accounting for compound interest for the past 18 years, you could have now bought a Ferrari?
Man: Do you smoke?
Lady: No.
Man: Where's your freaking Ferrari then?

Hah, those numbers are a little unrealistic but I get the point.

During the presentation when she asked about the finances in front of the other couples I was pissed but didn't want to embarrass my fiancée or anything so I said the budget stuff off to the side when she tried to talk us in to it. I wanted to say in front of the other 3 couples what the hell business is it of yours what I make or can and can't afford. I absolutely hate when someone asks what I make. I got this a lot as a 25 year old last year driving a BMW that I was paying for for myself, especially new people I would train at work they would ask, I wouldn't get mad towards them directly, I'd just get a little annoyed and say I don't discuss my finances. I'm just a lot better with my money then I used to be, a small casino win of $12k got me out of all my bad debt.

Personally I've made many great changes over the last couple years, I sold my BMW which I was able to afford but couldn't save what I wanted, I cut my smoking down to half, I started going to school this year, when I get paid I take care of my debt first (not a lot) and put about $400-$600 in my savings, I just put $6500 in my rrsp and will use the return on my taxes to pay off the remaining balance of a engagement ring I bought ($4000). I'm on track to buy my first home in early 2014. I have my down payment of $15,000 but want to save another $10,000-$15,000 as a back up. We already have everything we need, couch, tv, dishwasher, bed, clothes, all my reptiles, etc.

Good for you.You are well balanced and I wish all the best for you and your Fiancée
Her selling was based on emotional blackmail and you would not put up with her BS.

Thanks a lot.

It wasn't easy getting to this savings # and I'm working hard with the fiancée to help her set a budget and pay down her bad debt. (I don't see school debt as bad regardless of if the course is finished or not)

I think this was the company that called my husband and I separately last year (before our wedding probably around this time of year) that we won a free dinner but would have sit in on something. He mentioned some company called him that we "won" something but he didn't commit. Then a few days later I got a call that I was a lucky draw winner and "won" too and I said to the girl on the phone "oh my fiancé got a call too, he won the lucky draw" (knowing that everyone wins this fake contest just to hear her response) and she was like "oh! You're both really lucky!". Told them I don't have the time and wasn't interested and didn't go. Thankfully they didn't call again.i didn't recall signing up for them at a wedding show. Something else I entered must have sold my info.

I saw this in some of the reviews I read on the consumeraffairs site:

Some people who get a registry have their info sold to these companies for this specific reason so it was probably from something like that. If I ever get a call myself from this company again the person who calls will surely be told what I think of that company and why they should look for a different line of work haha.

Dood....you could have asked me as I ALMOST got suckered into what you got suckered into as I attended the Wedding Show last year and saw their booth as well....fiance at the time grabbed a couple of cloth pot handlers and left them her cell...

They called her a week or two later also claiming we won something and all we had to do was "sit down for a 2hr presentation"....warning bells were ringing when I heard that and we declined.

They continued to call us about once a week for 3 weeks!! I guess they didn't understand "NO" or wouldn't take "NO" for an answer...

Stay far away...and to others, don't bother attending the wedding show....what a load of overpriced crap...

If anything, you can do your own research via Google and word-of-mouth from friends to source reasonable priced items and also tips on how to plan/book/organize your wedding!!

It's different to get almost suckered into it and going. I posted my thoughts of the whole thing afterwards.

LOL I went to their fb page and put up a very bad review, had about 8 people reply saying THANKS, will not waste my time, etc and then a rep from the company came in and said email them so I did then the review got deleted, i copied it into a text file and will put it up late at night when they're all sleeping hopefully so more and more people can see it... And I'll keep doing it until they block me from their site. This way as many people as possible can see the scam and pushiness of it.

lol true about ALMOST going and actually going but seriously, what a bunch of scammers...can't believe they stooped so low as to delete your FB posts...but I guess since it is their FB page, they can do what they want....

And I can't believe they questioned your finances...very unprofessional and does it matter how much you make?

You could be making $300K per year but decided to put a very strict budget on your wedding and any other expenses so you could:

A. retire early
B. Buy a brand new mansion
C. Donate $$
D. anything I want to do with my $$

One of the first things people should do when planning their wedding is set a budget that they find reasonable and stick to it....costs can ran away very quickly...the industry is set up to make as much $$ as possible preying on this "once in a lifetime event".....everything is overpriced...

Oh and don't get me started on the halls....ohhhhh boy!!

Yep, our budget is around $15,000. I know we will be given $10,000 from my parents and her parents together. Personally do you know what I would rather do with that money? Buy a house, I could care less about a wedding, why not just have one big party for a day to celebrate, take the $ and buy a nicer house than what I can afford right now, but still live within our means? But that's just me...

They are free to do whatever they want, I can no longer post on their wall either... time to make a fake account and put up another review, the professional thing would have been to reply in that post I put on their asking exactly what happened and if there is anything they can do to make me reconsider, not say 'send me an email' then delete it 5 minutes later...

I had quite a few people reply in there saying 'thanks, definately will not attend this show' That means my job was done and I saved maybe 8+ people from potentially wasting away thousands of dollars. Also on the real dinner4two.ca site. They spell through as 'thru'. They lost all credibility as an honest and reliable company that is good to buy from with me. A typo is a typo but typing 'thru' makes it look like a damn 12 year old typed it up...

(On the testimonial page:

How did you get my name?

Our company accumulates over two million names of engaged couples in our database every year thru participation in over 1400 bridal shows nationwide as well as advertising in bridal magazines, wedding websites, tuxedo and bridal gown shops.

There you go everyone that is how they get your name and number

I would have asked them why they didn't say it was to sell us 3g's worth of cookware when they invited you? I thought you "won"!

My fiancee got the same call. I googled ahead of time so we didn't waste our time. Though I do usually enjoy arguing with those types of sales people!

Oh I could have argued to hell and back but I didn't want to embarrass my fiancée or upset her or anything so I held back. Never again will I do this, we will most likely use the 2 night thing for Niagara Falls at the double tree or embassy suites if they'll cover that much but part of me thinks it's only to stay in one of those ghetto hotels there, the last time I went into a ghetto hotel in Niagara Falls it was disgusting so I walked out and went to the embassy suites

It's so sketch I have to send them a $100 deposit. That's fine and all but they won't take a deposit by credit card, only bank Draft or money order. What do you want to bet I wouldn't get my deposit back... No proof really either its like an EMT payment is it not?

I have some observations:
o I think the OP did great. You should not get offended though. Have fun with it. You have the money and the power here.
o I am more concerned about this statement the OP made: "pay for a good poison of the wedding." :-0

I got an email back from the 'president' of the company and they will be sending me a pair of Santoku knives. Free is free right.

He also stated in the email that he will take the necessary steps to make sure this does not happen again. He said he was shocked and appalled.

It sounds like someone will be riding the EI train very soon.
