Anyone else dislike the Battle Royale genre?

Just played a few rounds of CoD Warzone for the first time. I’m typically an average/slightly above average CoD player but I really disliked this experience. This seemed to be the rhythm of the matches
1. Land, scramble for gear and don’t get killed
2. Armor up and camp, waiting for circle to shrink
3. If circle threatens you, move and camp again. If not, stay and camp further.
4. Wait for shrinking circle to force short burst of action
5. Win or die

I realize it’s supposed to play different than regular CoD but I didn’t think it would be that boring. Got some kills but died usually in the first 50 people. Irealize I’m in the minority but really disliked my time. Anyone else feel similarly or are most enjoying it?
If it’s not at least 50% off is it really a deal?

Yes 100% for the same reason.

If I do game during the week it is for a couple of hours. The last thing I want to do is spend 20 min looting only to be killed in some bullshit way.

Ditto. I think if I was back in my early 20s I’d have more patience but since I am like you and only gaming a few hours at a time I’d rather have some progress or feeling of accomplishment Ditto. That's where Warzone actually tried to freshen things up though. They introduced the Gulag, allowing people to play their way back in, and they've given multiple ways for people to get bought back.

It's definitely an issue with other BR games though. PUBG can get excruciatingly boring if you die early...

All the guys I play with are all in our 30s, and there's even someone who's 40, and we manage to have fun with Warzone, but it's definitely way more enjoyable if you have a squad who you play well with. Solo BR or playing with randos is a totally different game

Never been a Warzone fan. Only time I play really is in the colder months where and a bunch of friends gone on. The Warzone fad for us got boring quick and we went back to regular multiplayer.

imo Warzone isn't the best game to decide if you like BR games or not. Personally prefer Fortnite for a BR game. It's similar to any game though, it becomes more enjoyable the better you become. When you're in the top 3 fighting for the win, things get intense, adrenaline starts to creep in, you're under pressure to eliminate people before the circle closes you in. That's the rush you play for.

It's very different in multiplayer mode, you're racking up kills - you die, you respawn. You know the map, you know the weapons, you can spot enemy tendencies, you're not constantly adjusting to a scene. Totally different game.

Agreed - part of it is chasing the feeling of winning, which is unmatched by a regular multiplayer game or even larger Conquest/Ground War mode win. I could have an amazing regular multiplayer game where my team wins the game and I rack up the most kills, but once you finish, you automatically jump into the next match without that feeling that you accomplished something. The satisfaction of my team beating out 100-200 enemies to come out on top is just not there, and it's hard to explain.

There are definitely multiple ways to strategically approach the game, and camping may feel like the right play but it's rarely the optimal way to approach the game if you want to win. If you want an adrenaline rush, there are hotspots (like Superstore in Warzone or School in PUBG) on the map where you can quickly get into firefights, and if you come out alive, you're going to be geared up for the game. Or you can safe drop in the outskirts and continually move with the circle, which provides some action but doesn't feel like a campfest. Or in Warzone you can chase contracts around the map and buy UAVs to give yourself more targets to take out. I actually find camping early in the middle to be detrimental in Warzone because you'll be so ill-equipped in the end game.

I typically dislike the Battle Royale genre because I don't feel like I get enough action for my time (Father of 2, full time job=not much time for gaming). Fortnite was the first Battle Royale I tried and I found it incredibly boring and a waste of time.

With the release of Fall Guys last week on PS Plus I have found an exception to this genre. This game is incredibly fun and quick to get into a game. It is basically non-stop action with very little downtime. Two thumbs up for Fall Guys!

Well put! I’ve shamefully jumped up and did a little dance when winning a BR. It’s a big rush. When getting the most kills in multiplayer, the most I do is take a screenshot that eventually gets deleted.

This is true as well. If you’re time limited, BR’s don’t provide the most value. Fortnite is a time sink. You sit down and play for a few hours, either you’re just chatting with your buddies getting kills or you meet new people online and go on a run together. I added Fall guys to the library, might give it a try soon!

+1 for Fall Guys. With most Battle Royale, there's too much down time... plus the skill ceiling is too high for me to win. At least with normal multiplayer team matches, I'm on the winning side half the time.

I can understand that, even if I didn’t experience it myself. I did have a brief moment of excitement where I held down a room to capture some Intel. Nobody really challenged but I was freaking out the whole time. It reminded me a little bit of king of the hill or hard point. However, after that it was just more of me waiting around and then eventually I was killed by someone who I had dead to rights. Again, I know I am in the minority and I don’t for see these games going away but I hope that class in multiplayer still shows itself in future releases

Yeah, it's definitely not for everyone, but I think winning or getting close to winning makes things more interesting. I still remember the very first time I won a BR game - it was PUBG, and I had a squad with a couple RFDers in it ( @gatorb6 @SpicYMchaggis ) where our quad managed to hold down two apartments to end the game, gunning down the last team as they tried to flank around the houses. Nothing in gaming has brought the same kind of feeling with it than winning at BR.... The anticipation and the level of stress amps up as the circle closes and less people are left on the map. If anything, it's like a Search & Destroy game because there are no respawns and the stakes are higher. Last week, I had a day where my duo/squad came in 2nd place three times and we narrowly missed each win. I can still vividly picture how those all played out in the end, and I've even replayed the what-ifs in my mind to try to learn from where we made mistakes or where luck just wasn't in our favour.

BTW I'm not young either - I and the guys I run with are all in their 30s. Some, like me, have kids and all of us are employed full-time. It's basically taken over my late night gaming and I'm able to squeeze in like 2-3 games. Thankfully other games like Cyberpunk aren't getting in the way right now. I will jump also into regular MP as well, especially when I need to grind guns or just for a quick fix though

LOL, I still remember that, it was far less exciting for me because I didn't quite understand what was happening, didn't actually see anyone and was just following the group.

But yeah those moments are what make Battle Royale games great, I had plenty of those and other funny moments with freinds over the 8-12 months I was hooked on PUBG.
These games are probably the best thing to come out of this generation.

No one is ever really beating or even engaging with anywhere close to 100 players in a typical BR game. More often than not you're probably only actually engaging with maybe 1/4 of those total players if that and making it to the end is largely determined by chance of how the other skirmishes in other areas of the map played out that you had no influence over.

For example, I won a game of Fortnite once but I don't feel like I actually beat 100 other players when what really happened is the high level players who would've destroyed me out took each other out somewhere on the other side of the map and I just happened to encounter 5-10 other noobs I could deal with for the "win". Imo BR is not really you vs 100 other players as much as it is a bunch of separate single life death matches taking place across a giant map. I certainly understand the appeal and strategy behind surviving to the end but I personally get no satisfaction from it, the slow pace bores me to death and I greatly prefer traditional fast paced frequent action multiplayer FPS games

Obviously I'm not fighting 100 - 200 other people... but the potential is there Grinning Face With Smiling Eyes... The kill record in Warzone was something like 120 kills for a four man squad, so it is possible, I'm just not at that skill level. Still, it's a far cry from the 6-10 other enemies you're fighting over and over again in a regular multiplayer match.

Getting 5 kills in a BR gives me more satisfaction than getting 20 kills in Multiplayer. And anything above a 1 K/D ratio in Warzone or PUBG and I'm feeling like I accomplished something.
