Anyone register a car lately?

Any changes in service due to covid? Busy? Line-ups?

Was thinking to going first-thing in the morning at the very least.

I changed to custom plates March 25th the week Covid made everything shut down. Many locations are closed but some are still open. Very few people when i went, you have to line up outside and they only let 5 or so ppl in at a time. Check the site to see if the location you are going to is open.

That list shows they are all closed. A local Honda dealer told me on 6th April that they are still selling cars though and have access to the Ministry of Transportation for registering the vehicles.....so maybe they get an exception.

Anybody know about transfer of ownership stuff? I know only a few Service Ontario locations are open. Unfortunately, we were in the process of trying to get a car for my dad and I have someone I wanna buy from, but the seller wasn't sure if they were dealing with that right now. I'm aware there's Easter long weekend right now, was gonna give them a call Tuesday for one of the open locations.

some are open and some are closed. Seems that the majority are closed. Service Ontario offices are privately run so up to them as to opening. You just have to search around on Monday/Tuesday to see.
There are a # of players out looking to scoop vehicles at reduced pricing. They are fairly aggressive and fast on deals that pop up.

Their website says they've gone back to the old style plates. But yeah, I definitely don't want to put those things on my new ride.

If anyone's curious it went fine.

Wasn't very busy, was much quicker than any other time I've been to service Ontario lol. They have people line up outside with a security guard letting people in one-by-one. Acrylic screens, tape on floor, etc...

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure how often the list changes but at the moment, as far as I can tell, every location in the Ottawa area is closed! That said, there are some outside of town that are still open (Embrun, Kempville, Renfrew, etc)

The Stittsville location was open up until a week ago.

Does anyone know if BOTH persons have to go to Service Ontario if you are registering the Used Vehicle under BOTH names? Or can one spouse show up to represent both parties?

Can't find the answer anywhere - nor do I want to stand in line and waste my time. I tried calling MTO - extremely long wait on the phone.

Yes. Are you sure you want joint ownership? It can get messy.

Yes, both parties have to be present.

I was not aware that you could register a vehicle under two names. What is the benefit of doing this?

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I know it is messy but the other half can't drive it - even if she tried LOL

Its for personal reasons.

So someone did mention to me a letter of authority or authorization. Apparently you can send someone in your absence - just needs to be a signed document. Not sure though, will investigate further.

One reason could be if one half dies or passes away. There is no probate or estate crud - the other living person assumes ownership automatically. Some senior citizens do this when they are near.....

I'm not sure if there is any benefit. We were newly weds in love and financed a car together about 15 years ago. Ownership and plates under both names. We just continued to carry that tradition as the years went past and have every asset under both our names. The car I drive daily is my car and the car she drives daily is her car.

My current car is different though. She bought the car to surprise me so did the financing alone so the the vehicle portion permit is under my wife's name while the plate portion permit is under both our names.
