Apple TV Newbie

Just setup Apple TV and am currently playing TV shows purchased and dowloaded from my ipad in my ITunes account. I was wondering if there is alot of data usage when playing these purchased TV shows on my home internet service I have 95GB available per month. Is it correct to say that if they were purchased and stored on my ITunes account then are played via Apple TV they are not being streamed live? Not sure either way, need to be enlightened on this. Thanks for any info.

As long as you are watching through Itunes you are not using data. Same would go for listening to any music you have on itunes, etc.

Thanks for the input appreciate that. I just checked my internet home usage this morning and after playing 2 tv shows from older seasons from ITunes I consumed about 1.80 GB above my normal daily usage. Not terrible but something to keep an eye on. Will try playing them from time to time from the IPAD directly as they are downloaded there in the Video app to Apple TV.

hmmm..I honestly was not aware that playback from itunes uses data? Perhaps over ATV it does, and sounds like it does.

Did more reading and discovered that Apple TV caches itunes movies..if ATV cached the entire movie you will use little data, and if little was cached it would use much more data as in your case.

Couple of ways to minimize data usage
1 run an iTunes server and download the shows to the iTunes library. Turn on home sharing in iTunes and on the appletv and the iPad. Stream to the iPad or the appletv from the local server
2. Download onto the iPad and push to the appletv.
