In fact, apart from an indirect reference to the zombie apocalypse (a passing mention combined with a character watching a news broadcast), it features no scenes of its characters battling the undead. (Hey, director and star Matthias Schweighöfer did tell us that "this is not a zombie movie.")
On the panel, producer Deborah Snyder doubles down on this idea of this not being a zombie film, explaining that she and fellow producer Zack Snyder "really liked the idea ... that it was set at a time when the zombies existed in the world but it wasn't a zombie film."

Zack Snyder says it was always the plan to examine Dieter’s backstory in a prequel to Army Of The Dead: "Part of it was the desire to explore the mythological roots of the different safes."warpdrive wrote: ↑ i liked that they kind of made fun of heist movies. Otherwise, I had no idea they would take a minor character and build up a movie around his backstory. I guess it might be fun if they did that with some of the other side characters too.
Yeah, I was really hoping that some deep knowledge of Wagner's music was required in order to figure out the safes idiosyncrasies and he would have to a fair bit or research in order to get them open.
He has very tiny fingers like "little sausages" and really good hearing, to hear and feel the vibrations.

But this movie could've also stood on it's own, using just the TV news reports as a link to Army of the Dead.
That said, I hope Zack Snyder makes more of these and fleshes out the armyverse a bit more...
