Ask for help, Replace flex pipe ,$1000???

Yesterday , I took my 2006 Hyundai Elantra to the dealer for an oil change .
The dealer told me i had a
problem with something called a Flex Pipe that would cost approx. $1000 to repair.
I am short on money right now, so i didn't fix the flex pipe. Dealer always change the whole exhaust tube assembly ,but
it is probably out of my budget.
I was thinking of cutting it out and splicing in a length of flexible metal tubing.

Does anyone have any idea what a Flex Pipe is and why it costs $1000? The price is sooo ridiculous!

Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Dealer probably wants to change the whole exhaust from engine all the way to the back of the car. You might only need the flex pipe . Go to a couple of exhaust shops and get an estimate.

The flex coupling itself ($40?) is sold at ct and partsource if you really want diy via cutting and clamping

More importantly, why do they want to change it? Can you hear an exhaust leak? A universal flex joint is $40, but will be sliced and welded in.

I lost my ex-wife you a tragic flex-pipe accident on the highway.

Never underestimate these things.

OEM parts have intrinsically magical properties that make them more expensive to manufacture?

OEM is 6x the price of a reputable Bosal pipe? Tell the dealer to just get a Bosal then, who needs an OEM pipe that's 6x the price. If they insist that it has to be oem, then go somewhere else. Your service advisor should be thoughtful enough to quote you an aftermarket pipe instead if it's that much cheaper.

BTW, OEM pipe does not have a cat either. See this video https://youtu.be/SOw-nhMtK1M and this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gfePNn6_68. The cat sits before the flex pipe flange.

Take if to L&G like a couple ppl said. I used to use them before they moved their shop. Good guys.

And I don't blame a dealership for not being willing to install aftermarket parts. They can't warrantee them the same way as OEM parts and their markup isn't there then either.

Just get a flex pipe welded in for $100-150 depending on if they have to remove the y-pipe or down pipe to weld the flex on, or if it can be done while still on th car.

Thats not how it works. Dealers buy their parts as its speced in the database. The OEM part is likely the entire exhaust, possibly with the cat attached. There is no flex only section available to them through the computer. If you want them to use a third party part, you likely have to strike a deal or be willing to bring it in yourself; however at that point you're just paying for expensive labour.

For example, I needed a caliper bushing from Mazda. The part on Rockauto was $5 each. The dealers wanted $90 because it included the pins, bushings and a lube pack; there is no bushing only option.

Since when do dealerships use non-oem parts?

How do you know the OEM part is the entire exhaust? You work for Hyundai or have access to their system? I don't think it's likely that you're forced to buy a cat as well when you just need a flex pipe, but if that's really the case then it's stupid. Stay away from Hyundai.
