Asking for advice on a car I purchased at a used car dealership.

I picked up a car from a used car dealership in Toronto last Thursday.

The A/C was not blowing the cold air when I had a test drive, so I asked him to check before the delivery. On the pickup day it was blowing cold air, and I was told that it only need the refringent charged up.

On Sunday morning, the A/C was blowing cold air only when the car was in motion. When the car was idle, the air became warm. After a while, it stopped blowing cold air all together.

Today I took the car to an auto-mechanic to check the A/C unit and I was told the A/C compressor is defective and needs to be replaced.

The car came certified meaning all the safety inspections had already been completed. Despite this, the auto-mechanic I visited today informed me that the lower control arm needs to be replaced as well.

I would like to get some advice from you guys as to what I should do before I go back to the dealership to ask them to take action on these issues. I know that the lower control arm issue is considered a safety hazard and should have been inspected properly during the safety inspection but I am not sure if the A/C is related to the safety certification of the car.

However, the dealer knew that the A/C had an issue before the delivery, so I assume that he should be responsible for fixing it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

You should have had it inspected before buying.
If the AC needs topping up, then that means there's a leak. Topping it up is only a temp fix.
What car? How many KM? Why does he say the control arms are bad? Are they bent? Bushings worn out?
AC is not a safety item.
Good luck getting help from the dealer. Hopefully they're helpful.

There is knocking noise when turning the steering wheel especially with brake applied. Also, there is quite amount movement on the ball joint.

He seems a nice guy but we will see what he says....

Did your used car come with a written warranty? You need to provide more detail for anyone to help you.

Every vendor of almost everything is "nice" when you are giving them money.

Until you want some/all of it back.

If you think it’s not worth it just return it and choose a different car. Make sure that you inspect before.

Unfortunately OP bought from a used car lot, and not the pre-owned section of a brand name dealership. A brand name dealership might help you out because their reputation is on the line, but used car lots prey on people with bad credit/poor/first time buyers/young and dumb/new immigrants to Canada. They don't care about their reputation because there's always suckers falling for them. And the inventory are mostly auction vehicles that are salvage from out of province, or dealership trade ins that is not worth their time (Otherwise the dealer will sell it themselves in their pre-owned section).

OP you should contact OMVIC and explain them your situation, especially if you were sold a car safetied that is clearly unsafe. But 99% chance you won't get the used car lot to accept responsibility and repair your damages. At most they might offer you to return your car at a $1k loss, and only if you buy another car from them at a higher price.

I would give the used car lot a chance to rectify the issues first. If you say he seems like a good guy, give him a chance. But if it turns out he screws you over, then show no mercy. Complain to OMVIC, leave him very negative Google, Facebook, and Twitter reviews, and then name the place here. By the time we are finished with him after leaving our reviews, he will most likely reconsider his options.

Next time take the car for an inspection and save yourself a lot of hassle.

Did the car come with any warranty, and is it still in effect? If not, doubtful they will fix it, but it is worth pursuing anyways.

Even the shadiest of scumbag used car lots have some sort of 14-30day “warranty”. I hope this works out for the OP.

A/C is not safety related.

Lower control arm could be. Did you look for your self how it looks?

This is why getting a pre purchased inspection is good before buying a car.

Did you buy the car certified?
I have bought cars from dealers before as is.
I went into it knowing I was paying little but had stuff to fix. If they certified for you - it should at least meet the requirements of the safety. I can tell you a knocking lower control arm should not pass the safety inspection. That said - do you know it’s the lower control arm? What about the shock or coil, sway bar links, etc etc. suspension noises can be hard to find.

I was there yesterday but the owner was not there.

I spoke to a sales guy and their mechanic regarding the issues I have with the vehicle. I was told that they will fix the problems. So, I would have to bring the car on Saturday morning for them to see. That is a good sign, isn't it? I am sure if the owner will agree with what his employee said, but I only can hope he will.

I will post again on Saturday....

Yes, it was certified by them.

The mechanic from a garage that I usually go told me that it seems like the lower control arm ball joint is causing the knocking noise. I did not see it but I was told that there is a lot of movement on the ball joint when he shook the tire. For the sway bar links, I was told that it was replaced when they certified the vehicle, and my mechanic did not say anything other than the lower control arm.

Makes sense. Ball joint with excessive movement will do this. Can even perform worse when suspension is warm (ie driving for a while).

If you do one do both.

I think it's a good sign. Reputation means a lot in the used car industry as people tend to be very cautious when buying a used car, as they should be, and a bunch of negative reviews can end up costing the business in the long run. If they are a company that cares about reputation and reviews I can see them making an effort to keep you happy and the experience positive. Looking forward to seeing the update on Saturday. Good luck.

OP, in situations like this I would normally take a audio recorder or record a memo on your phone. Just so you have evidence of what they say, so in case they retaliate on their own words, you have a recording for proof of what they agreed on or how the conversation went..

OP I am pretty sure you need a wheel alignment after replacing lower control arms so make sure they do that was well. They may have to send it out.
