Awning Installation on the outside sidewalk

Hi, I have install Awning in outside sideways to avoid rain/snow from the sideways. I have basement and have to rented it out and want to install awning for their protection from rain and snow. Will I have to take permission from City of Ajax? My friend told me that I will have to take the permission to install awning on outside sideways.
