Back in the market looking for a printer for a dorm setup... looking for recommendations

Hi guys...

Looking into printers after 7 years or so and was surprised to see that those $40 samsung, brother lasers are no longer around. Need one for my daughter going to a dorm setup in a University this year. I was dead-set against inkjet printers because the ink has always been a nuisance for me. If you use it, it runs out, if you don't use it, it dries out. Now with the HP subscription, it seems that they're finally getting it right. What are your thoughts about this? Is it a good idea?

Thank you!

Those $40 printers were pretty bad, to be fair; I don't mind that they've largely gone away.

I hate multifunction printers, but they might have a use for your daughter. However, I've had an HP 1020 laser printer (B&W) since about 15 years ago, and it has NEVER failed me. Checking the status, it has printed 15,885 sheets in that time without needing anything other than cartridges replaced. I can't recall EVER removing a jammed sheet, but I'm sure it happened. Obviously this is no longer manufactured, but in case you're debating a "cheap" inkjet (colour, likely) vs a spendier b&w laser ... I am getting a lot of life out of mine, and no dried up ink.

A laser printer will almost certainly have a lower total cost of ownership than any 'printer as a service' ripoff. Brother's small laser printers are your best choice here.

I think that was the model we had. No issues except they never came out with drivers after XP and I got tired of trying different ones to make it work on Win 7 (never tried on 10).

This one has worked with Windows XP thru Windows 11 without me needing to install a driver (or, more accurately, without me having to find a driver). Must have been a different printer.

I have an HP printer (Envy 6000 series) and HP Instant Ink subscription. It's been worth it. You could do a breakeven analysis based on what your (daughter's) expected print usage will be compared to buying cartridges on your own. Instant Ink favours very heavily for people doing a relatively low number of prints. Though because many of HP's printers must be connected to wifi it can be a hassle to troubleshoot them if issues arise (e.g, The Envy 6000 can't save multiple wifi networks so after changing my home internet I had to factory reset the printer and delete it from my HP Smart account then re-add it).

A black and white laser printer is argubly the ideal for kids in school. With toners generally able to print ~2,000 pages it's enough to last the full 3-4 years of university/college.

I would recomend a Brother B&W laser with scanner function such as the one above.

I got a refurblished one similar to the above for my son 7 years ago and it is still running strong.
He mentioned that the scanner was very useful when he needed to scan documents (passport, driver's licence, etc) to electronic form for varous reasons. Otherwise, he would needed to go to the student union to get those done for a fee.

The scanner portion of the printer is only making the device two inches taller and adding half inch extra both length-wise or depth-wise. The scanner portion does not add much weight to the device. Its overall footprint on a desk is still quite reasonable.

I vaguely remember I paid $80 for the refurblished Brother printer with scanning function. The brand new price was about $140.
