that sounds like a good deal! 2 items need to be replaced - Audio daughter board and speakers?
The daughter board certainly. The speakers not sure because chances are changing the board will resolve the speaker issues too if one is lucky. If the speakers still cause trouble, then changing those would be next. Process of elimination is your friend in such projects.

Row 288:
93 1 NOTEBOOK A- DELL LATITUDE E6420 CORE I5/2520m 2.5 4 320 dvdrw 14 W7P AUDIO JACK BAD / INTERNAL SPEAKERS INTERMITTENT $65 immediate

Good for the average DIYer. The USB/Audio daughter board ships for anywhere between $6-14 (Free Ship from China). With some weekend elbow-grease, it would make a nice machine for the price.
For the price, it's great. BUT... I have a 5520 with the same cpu and 8gig of ram. All I use it for is browsing, and for the last 6 months+ it's been nothing but annoying how slow it is.

With an SSD or HDD? An SSD makes a big difference.

Agreed. And to level up even more - using Linux. ;)

Only HDD. I have an SSD for it, but bought a newer laptop (Vostro 3558) on Black Friday. Maybe I should've stuck with the original plan of just upgrading to ssd, cause the screen and res on the new one suuuuuucks.

They now have "10% OFF 4 OR MORE A- NOTEBOOKS ". Not as hot as their earlier Holiday Discount of 10% off of 2+. But good regardless if one is buying in bulk :)

you might need to reapply thermal paste. i did it on mine (x220) and the temps improved from ~70C to ~55C.

here is my review from another thread of a recent purchase i made:

I am here to provide a review of the unit I received:

First of all, shipping was quick, I ordered Thursday and it was delivered this morning by FedEx. I think rule of thumb is, if you order before Thursday and they ship it via FedEx before Thursday, you likely receive it before Friday.

Well-packaged in a brown cardboard box:

Image

The machine's physical condition is pristine (confirmed by another RFD poster, the actual usage of this laptop is only 800 hours, more on this later). The keys are barely used (because corporate employees usually use USB keyboards).

Image
Image

Installation of windows 10 is straightforward, all I needed to do was create a windows 10 installation media (any USB>= 8 GB would do) on MS's website, plug the installation media into the left USB (that one is USB 2.0 I suppose?) and boot it up and choose "I don't have key", then choose "windows 10 pro" and the installer will pick up the BIOS key automatically.

The battery wear is 17%

Image

The SSD is in good health. The machine has been turned on 1557 times by the previous user, which basically means daily usage for 4 years (corporate machines often go through 3 or 4-year leases) as 4*365 = 1,460. However, the actual usage is only 800 hours, i.e., 100 work days. My guess would be that the previous owner only used this laptop on business trips over the past 4 years, but it was subject to mandatory daily restarts for potential security updates. (likely a company policy).

Image

The hardware is as advertised, i5-5300U, 8GB RAM:

Image

The resolution is also as advertised, 2560*1440 is indeed stunning. Also it is touch screen.

Image

Here are some additional pictures of the laptop viewing from the side:

Image

All in all, I am very happy with my purchase, for $500+shipping, this is an ultra-book with amazing physical build and resolution, decent specs and battery with very low wear. Probably the best $500 ultra-book you can get!

Picked up a T420 (i7 CPU, no battery, 1 broken USB) for $75 and the Dell E6420 with that broken audio thing for $65. Time for some fun DIY :)

I love the T420 laptops for their keyboard!

Will post more details as I progress.

So I got an A- X240 with broken palmrest (visible crack across fingersprint), worn keys, new 120GB SSD from them for ~$300, both batteries at around 34% wear, not FHD, i7-4600U.

Today I traded it with someone for his GE70-2PE-Apache-Pro, he wanted to trade because he couldn't install windows, he had to run linux and he was sick of it.

so I traded:
i7-4600U
8GB RAM
12.5 inch 1366*768
120GB SSD
Worn keys
Broken palmrest
67%+67% two batteries (~31,000 mwh in total)
for
i7-4710hq
12GB RAM
17.3 inch 1920*1080
500GB HD (I will have to get a new SSD, mechanical drive is simply unusable)
Backlit keys
65% battery (~31,000 mwh in total)
burnt sound card (no sound from speakers or headphones, but Bluetooth headphones work)
burnt GTX 860M (i.e., I am stuck with the integrated intel graphics 4600)
Took me less than half an hour to format the 500gb drive, install windows 10 onto it. it picked up the bios windows 8 key too!

Not to shabby, eh?
