best area to stay for 3 days in South Florida?

We're planning out trip in late February to Florida, and we've got a lot of things booked for the South Florida area (we're doing Key West, Naples, Miami, etc). However, we've got an empty three days in our itinerary, and we're trying to decide where to stay during that time. We'd like to find a place we can basically set up HQ for the three days and be able to visit places within an hour's drive. We'd like the area to have some nice places to walk around, maybe some nice window shopping, not decrepit and rundown, and it has to be near a beach :)

So we're looking at Fort Lauderdale as being ideal, but are wondering about places further north or south of FtL. What's Hollywood Beach like? What about Palm Beach, Vero Beach, Port St. Lucie....? Are any of these preferable in terms of a place to just hang out and hit the beach for three days?

Might be better to post your proposed itinerary. Where will you be going to "south FL" from and where to next?
Almost too cheap to shop through RFD

Will be heading first to Key West, then leaving KW on the 20th. Then our next "scheduled appointment" is the Mets spring training game in Port St. Lucie at 1:30pm on the 23rd....we plan to leave the game and head to our next scheduled stop in Naples that evening. So basically we're "killing time" from leaving KW late morning on the 20th until the ballgame in PSL in the early afternoon on the 23rd.

Hollywood/Hallendale has the diplomat which is a little pricey but nice. Close to I95.

Florida is a long skinny state... but easy to get around.
Lots of great pockets... different from one another ... some of our faves
1- The Keys
2- Fort Lauderdale & Hollywood
3- Naples & Fort Myers & Sanibel Island
4- St Petersburg & Clearwater (actually the whole Western Tampa Bay Peninsula ... St Pete Beach to points North)
5- Tampa
6- Orlando & The Space Coast
7- Daytona - St Augustine - Ponte Vedra
8- The Gulf Coast Panhandle

Everywhere is different, and got lots to offer.

We absolutely adore the St Petersburg - Clearwater Area & Tampa.
You could combine the two.
Tampa is not a cheap city... but it has a very vibrant downtown
Catch a Lightning Hockey Game... or take the streetcar to Ybor City

Ybor City = https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ybor_City

We also love historic St Augustine and the surrounding area
Daytona Beach to the south ... gotta drive on the sand
Nearby World Golf Hall of Fame & TPC Sawgrass (Visitors Welcome to tour the clubhouse)
There are also Outlet Malls along I-95
And decent shopping in Ponte Vedra

If there’s anywhere else on my list that has caught your fancy ... just ask

FLL and Hollywood Beach area is good. Tampa is on the other side, if you look at the map. Tampa/Clearwater does NOT have clear water, so if you like beach, FLL area is better. But keep in mind in Feb. the water is not too warm.

The FLL area has what you are looking for, enough shops, including the huge Sawgrass Mills mall. Can take the water taxi for half a day or even the whole day and listen to the narratives on the nice $50-90 M homes or yachts. Nice strolls by the beach, lots of restaurants.

Hotels by the beach will of course be more expensive. So if you're ok not by the beach, you can save some money.

Thanks--would this kind of stuff only be available down by FLL/Hollywood, as opposed to say, Palm Beach/Lake Worth?
