This is much smaller, cheaper, can't do videos can't do videos calls (no camera).

The 80$ full version one is better value but has its place in a child's bedroom for example and definitely this over a Google mini hands down.

FYI for anyone thinking of buying this clock, it runs the Android Things OS which Google is dropping support for.

From the Android Things Wikipedia entry:
Android Things is a deprecated Android-based embedded operating system platform by Google, announced at Google I/O 2015, and launched in 2018. Android Things Dashboard shutdown began on January 5, 2021. After January 5, 2022, Android Things Dashboard will be shut down completely and all remaining data will be deleted.

From the Android Things Wikipedia entry:
Meaning this won't work with the google home ecosystem, or you just can't save personal info in the device?

Same reason anyone would want a Google home mini in any of their rooms. Except it also has a display. I have mine in my home office. It looks good and can show me any of the Google cams. If someone rings the doorbell it immediately displays the nest hello video feed.

E-waste.

As much as I like Android, the non-phone devices come across as inelegant and clunky, except for rare devices like the Nvidia Shield.

Apple, as ridiculous as their consumer base may seem, would pull off something equivalent with a much more elegant UI and package.

For 5 times the price, but still.

I have one.

Its useless.

Don't buy.

Your wifi cuts ? Well bad news your alarms are now cancelled/cleared.

Don't have an internet connection ? Bad news you can't even use it as a clock.

Enjoy !!!

The same reason you might have a standard alarm clock in the bedroom: it simply works. The Smart Clock isn't meant to run hundreds of apps, it just sits there and shows the time, displays photos, plays music and wakes you up. Yes, you can do that with a phone, and yes, many people do, but not everyone wants to use their phone 24/7.

Not sure why this happened to you; perhaps yours was defective. I've been using one for a year and a half now and while Wi-Fi interruptions can limit some of the features, they have never "cleared" the alarms.

More limited display, tinny sound. If you just need a home mini + clock may be good for you. From Android Police:

Edit: Old article, some features like photos added since. Still limited compared to Smart Displays though.

He probably steals his wifi

Mine has worked fine since I bought it maybe a few months after release

Also curious - what does it mean that Google Things is being decommissioned? The device will still work I assume but won't get any updates or anything?

so instead of being able to see images from your Google Photos library, you can only pick from a handful of clock faces
According to this guy you can view Google Photos so maybe it was added in an update?
