[Best Buy] Acer Aspire 1 15.6" full HD laptop (Intel Celeron N4120/64GB eMMC/4GB RAM/Windows 10) $249.99

Done my research, got a laptop for my 8 years old. Great price for a decent size 1080 FHD laptop that's great for learning/watching streaming videos/social media. This is the only laptop under $250 that give you 15.6" FHD, and it look pretty stylish IMO. Not for gaming of course.

It's spec like a chromebook but operate on Windows 10 S. Key specs as follows:

15.6" screen 1920 x 1080 FHD native resolution with narrow bezel. Intel UHD Graphics 600 (most chromebook/laptop in this price range are 1366 x 768)

Quad core Celeron N4120 1.1 GHz (turbo 2.6 GHz) released Q4/2019 (most lower end/older chromebook CPU are 2 cores)

64GB eMMC flash storage (Mine only shows 59GB ? usable storage 34GB since windows take up 25GB after updates), 4GB DDR4 RAM.

Edit: Thanks for pointing out there is no micro SD slot. The only way to increase physical storage if needed is by one USB 3.1 and two USB 2.0 port
Edit: Thanks "ballabones" for opening up his new purchase and confirmed the extra RAM slot, RAM upgradable to 8GB for $25.

My suggestions to maximize this thing:
  • Remove the "S" mode of Windows, extremely limiting
  • If you have the technical know-how, reinstall Windows 10 fresh, preferrably with an Enterprise or LTSC copy (less bloatware)
  • Run Windows Update repeatedly, keep restarting and running it again, until you truly get to "No updates" - otherwise Windows will silently try to do it in the background your first few days and make the unit cripplingly slow. If hard drive space is an issue, plug in a USB or external for updating
  • Create custom power settings to maximize performance (but sacrifice battery life, depends on your needs)
  • Use Edge as your web browser if you can handle it, as Edge runs better on lower end hardware than Chrome by far

Had a n5000 based cpu and its it more than adequate for school/office work. This being newer/more powerful makes its a very hot deal imo

..Why couldn't they just put a normal HDD in this.

Been looking for a Laptop for work for a bit now, Hard to buy when schools about to start and everyone is buying Laptops up.
Don't need anything fast but I do need space. Just didn't really want to add an external..

Just done updating and modified the power setting, will use the edge browser. Thanks for the tip! I am not sure if the N4120 with 4GB RAM can run full window 10 smoothly tho.

Obviously you can use a USB flash drive. You could also add an external hard drive. If you have an old SATA drive (I know that I have a 750GB out of an old laptop) you can get an enclosure for it. You can also get a USB SD card reader. I have a couple that take microSD cards.

In for one, thanks OP.

Need one for my 57 year-old dad that probably has the same level of computer knowledge as your 8 year-old :P

no internal ports for adding 2.5" drives or m.2 drives? can we upgrade the ram or is everything soldered? can OP or anyone who bought this unscrew the bottom and show us the internals?

it's fine. the cpu and 4gb ram will be enough to handle light tasks. i have a handlful of mini-pcs spec-ed similarly at home, just for watching youtube and running chrome (and nothing else) and they do just fine, even on 4k tvs

your bottleneck may be the 64gb emmc performance but shouldnt be too bad

How would this handle Stadia?
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain.

i would think that for streaming services like stadia, your internet and network connection matters the most? that being said, 1080p should be of no issues

I would never ever buy a laptop with Emc storage. You can never retrieve the files on it if it dies. It's soldered onto the motherboard.

I found a youtube video that shows the internal of Acer Aspire 1 (A114-32), however the bestbuy version is A115-31-C6XM. Don't know if they are similar or not.

Gotta love a good deal!
