[Best Buy] Asus UX425EA Ultrabook $1199.99

11th gen Core i7
Iris XE Graphics
16GB RAM
512GB NVMe SSD
14" non-touch matte IPS FHD screen; 98% sRGB, 300+ nits

Just bought one of these to try out after buying the UX393JA (higher end laptop, but with 10th gen i7, touch screen QHD+ IPS,).

Excellent screen, great edge to edge keyboard with dedicated home/pageup/pagdown/end keys.

Not sure which one I will keep.

around 20% better performance in single, dual, quad, and 8 multi core performance,
40%+ better graphics performance Iris Xe vs Iris Plus;
lighter
UX393JA has a warmer screen (whites look a bit yellow), whereas UX425EA has whiter whites
build quality seems to be almost as good as ux393j; screen bezel is plastic however; otherwise lid, deck, and bottom cover comparable although with lack of the gold trim accents.

$200 less for UX425EA which I can use to upgrade the 512GB SSD to 1 TB for $140 to match storage of UX393JA, or will probably go to 2TB for $260.

You do lose touchsreen, so there is that drawback; resolution of screen is lower but as a result should get better battery life.

For me it's absolutely bizarre that this laptop doesn't have a headphone jack

True, but it does have:

HDMI
2 thunderbolt USB-C 4 ports
1 USB-A 3.2 port
microSD.

Most ultrabooks just have USB-C and you have to buy dongles to get HDMI, usb-a, etc.

Do they still sell those French keyboards? Or they have learned their lesson and sell only US keyboards in Ontario.
I haven't bought a laptop from Bestbuy and Staples for a long time because I used to get those French Keyboards all the time.

The UX393JA has a 3:2 aspect ratio display. That alone would be enough for me to go for it. 3:2 is far far better for productivity, browsing etc.
Be a nice person and enjoy life

Tempting... the size, price and specs say yes... but it's just a traditional ultrabook without touchscreen or 2 in 1 features... hmmm

Thanks for pointing out touch-screen, would have pulled the trigger otherwise.

How's the screen colour accuracy/quality compared to UX393JA? I ordered it and it's still coming but that's pretty important since I wanted to edit some photos on it.

In terms of colour accuracy, the UX393JA is Pantone certified and as such is better. The UX425EA though is almost as bright as the UX393JA, and the colours are sufficiently saturated for me and reds do look red instead of orange like on the really low quality panels like those used in the Lenovo Flex 5 14 (which I also tried but returned).

It is bilingual but with normal sized shift keys, enter key, backspace. The keys just have the additional french lettering.

I can't tell from the pictures where the speakers are located.

Glad they fixed that. My 2017 Zenbook from Best Buy has a tiny left shift, huge right shift, and a vertical enter key. It's horrendous.

I had the UX393JA but had to return it. The screen is supposed to be very good according to many other people, but after ~2-3 minutes it would be very unpleasant to my eyes. It was like the blur tool from Photoshop was used on the edges of all the text so that the text wasn't crisp and the edges very slightly blurry (maybe unnoticeable to many people, but I definitely noticed it and it made using the laptop uncomfortable). It induced a very very slight motion sickness feeling that was just annoying and uncomfortable. This issue is definitely ridiculous given the screen is really high res. I believe it is a Windows scaling issue, since Windows is trash at scaling high res screens. Had it at the recommended 250% scaling and had the problem, fiddled around with the scaling % and other settings and still had the problem. Had to return it even though I really wanted to keep it since everything else is top notch, and it also looks nice and premium.

so the spacing and size is the same as a US keyboard?
I am a typist, and I couldn't standing hitting the shift key when I was intending to hit the enter key. It basically drove me nuts.

I remember buying a unit many years back for $1,000. I thought I could get used to it and gave it a chance. Then I loss track of the refund period. So I went in for a refund, but was refused.
I then sold it on Kijiji for $300. Just wanted to get rid of it ASAP. The guy buying the unit thought I might have spilled something on it.

Damn it, I hate that. I prefer upward facing speakers.
