The EPA says filters rated MERV 7 to 13 “are likely to be nearly as effective as true HEPA filters at controlling most airborne indoor particles.” The higher end of the range, MERV 11 to 13, removes 20-plus to 50-plus percent of the very smallest, 0.3-to-1.0-micron particulates, and filters in this range are especially popular.

So if that's the case and Costco sells these for about $30 (on sale) - why is an air purifier needed if your furnace can handle this? (Seem to be equivalent at about a MERV 13).

I'm certainly no expert on indoor air quality, but from what I've heard over the last several years from different sources:

1) Imagine how much air your furnace has to filter - if you are in mainly in one room/area/floor of your home, how often will the air actually be filtered in that one area?

2) The quality of the air in one area of the home can be worse than others, depending on a variety of factors (i.e. needs more filtration)

3) You can buy furnace filters with higher filtration levels/higher MERV levels, but the problem is these restrict airflow and puts additional stress on your furnace motor, causing premature wear. So that's why people buy the purifiers, because they'd rather pay up front / spend a few hundred bucks for a separate purifier to put in areas of the home where they spend the most time, rather than upgrade the filtration on the furnace, only ending up having to replace the furnace/parts of it prematurely (certainly more than likely to be more expensive than buying a separate purifier).
