According to the official specs of my 2018 laptop, the DVD drive is called "legacy optical format support"... Smiling Face With Open Mouth And Smiling Eyes

30$ for the Dell unit is a good price though. Never know when you'll need to dig up an old disk or when the kids will want to watch a movie.

The bro says apparently lots of kids stuff is still DVD.

I don't have kids so can't confirm, but he's always been the dude to be like "just in case". ...like "my laptop needs a DVDR drive just in case I need it on this one trip to pop in a dvd for the kids"

Back in 2016 I went out of my way to get a laptop with a dvd/cd drive included and I have literally never used it once lol.

Honestly if you're going to buy an external reader I don't know why you wouldn't buy one that can read/play blu-rays.

Can confirm. But it also kinda depends on the parents.

My cousin prefer getting DVDs for her kid so she can ensure it's appropriate, as opposed to streaming or the ever dubious Youtube. The kid is getting way savvier than her with tech so she's opting for ancient ways altogether lol

The only thing I use my DVD drive for is to rip movies to Plex. Was considering an external blu ray so I could start ripping blu rays instead.

I was looking at one to replace my old one and a Blu Ray/4K portable is quite expensive. The DVD drive would come in handy for legacy software and many of my old discs that were used as storage. I'll have to look into it...

Thanks...

I had to read a CD/DVD content a few months ago and none of the 5 computers at my house had a reader... times have definitely changed

When I looked on Amazon, there were a bunch of blu ray ones for around $85-$100. Didn’t look too closely at capabilities or ratings etc.

I heard it this morning, and not from this thread. I have literally thousands of discs, many made with my old DVD recorders and containing my collection of recordings that I now have people fighting over online. Plus the stuff that was archived from even older media like 5.25" and 3.5" discs and CDs. This will allow me to rip the discs for video and copy the other files so they can be kept in the cloud hopefully before they vanish forever. Just need more time...

Not a bad price.
I use it to install windows and the odd time for other things.
I would consider buying this so i don't have to buy a drive for my future desktops but the price is only ok. If it was $5-10 i would bite.

PS Whats a laptop?
In fact in Rand McNally they wear hats on their feet and hamburgers eat people

Had to read a DVD for work last year. After 2h hours of runing in circles and jumping trough hoops I brought the DVD home to read in on my personal laptop and transfer it to a USB key.

We all have 12 inch elitebooks with no dvd drive so after running after the IT guys we finally managed to find the sole single external dvd drive on the entire floor but wait! external USB peripherals are forbidden so you need to find THE person in the department with USB permissions so he can have a one-time usb access to plug-in the dvd drive. Cue more running in circles to find that we don't have such a person in our office, the last person with this permission was transfered 2 towns over the year before. I took the DVD and told my boss that for plausible deniability purposes, if he didn't ask me how I got the info, I wouldn't have to lie to him.

On the home side I keep an external DVD Drive to rip old music CDs and play kids movies on my wife's laptop. You don't need it every week but it's useful to have one for when you do need it.

After they sell this out I doubt dell is going to replace the inventory. This is like a clearance sale. I hope they clear out the external bluray burners next, if they sell that.

Why settle for full retail price when you can wait and get it at a lower price for better value (even better if there's a bundled freebies deal)? 😉

If you don't know what a DVD is, let me show you a picture of a couple other things I have lying around :

Got these free from the Dell Poweredge 750 rack deals back-in-the-days on RFD.
