A warning for everyone: this is not the gloomhaven game you are looking for

20 dollars isn't bad but this isn't a great game and nothing like the other gloomhaven games.

If you are looking to try out gloomhaven games I would suggest Jaws of the Lion, I think you can get it for around 40

What about Gloomhaven itself? I've never played it and it seems highly reviewed. Should I get that or Jaws of the Lion?

I have both and played both. I recommend just jaws of the lion. It's basically the shorter/beginner version of the bigger gloomhaven.

Thanks, I purchased Jaws of the Lion based on this thread. I've been interested in Gloomhaven for a while, just haven't made the jump.

Jaws of the lion is a prequel to the base game

So it makes sense to start with that, especially if you are on the fence. Especially since it is 1/4 the price.

If Founders didn’t have Gloomhaven in the name it probably wouldn’t get beat up so bad. It’s an “ok” game, but not the best example of a resource game.

Gloomhaven is fantastic, but comes with a learning curve. This can be greatly offset with a couple of free apps (GloomsteR and Gloomhaven Helper), which do a great job of providing spoiler free map setup and reducing the amount of card tracking for calculating monster modifier decks, etc.

JOTL is a great beginners way to get into Gloomhaven and the characters can be reused in that game as well.

You can’t go wrong with any of them, just good to know in advance what you want to sink your time and $$ into first.

JotL is a definite must-buy if you’re interested in Gloomhaven. Kinda wish JotL was launched first because setting the game up is so much easier and way more accessible than Gloomhaven. The map book is brilliant (like Stuffed Fables).

I haven’t played Gloomhaven yet, only JOTL, but I would say that the setup time alone is a big reason to go for JOTL first. There are some ways to fix that, like a good storage solution, however nothing can beat the scenario book used in Jaws.

Jaws of the Lion is aimed at a casual audience but that doesn’t make it easier either. Some scenarios are quite challenging too.
