[Best Buy] HP Pavilion 15.6" Gaming Laptop - Shadow Black (AMD Ryzen 5 5600H/512GB SSD/8GB RAM/GTX 1650) [800$] 678$ /w Perk

https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/hp ... 0/15539603

DEAL IS OVER ON BESTBUY

This is a great budget gaming laptop, and it's even cheaper than what HP.ca has it for.

Highlights:
Zen 3 CPU
DUAL CHANNEL MEMORY
GTX 1650 Graphics card
Backlight keyboard

Personally, I'd upgrade the RAM to 2x8GB, but 2x4GB isn't the end of the world.

5500U vs 5600H (Zen 2 vs Zen 3)
1x8GB vs 2x4GB (1x8GB makes it cheaper to upgrade to 16, while 2x4GB is better out of box performance)
iGPU vs GTX1650
1x2AX Wifi vs 2x2AX WiFi (double the speed, but only a plus if you have gigabit internet or do alot of LAN transfers imo)
~585$ (after 10% ebates) vs 800$

dell-new-inspiron-15-amd-5700u-16gb-1tb ... #p34978707
Better CPU, more RAM, and more storage space but no GPU and costs more.

Edit:

I just returned my 400$ HP Stream (Intel 7505) to get the 600$ 5500U model... and now I'm tempted to return that to buy this...

Make sure you buy this in the BF/CM return window so you can do the same. As a fellow RFD'r I would be disappointed if you had to break this streak..🤣

Bought exactly this for $663 a few weeks ago. Absolute beast of a laptop at that price, literally better CPU than my desktop 1800x embarrassingly enough. It has become my encoding machine.

Sigh. Time to start the return authorization now.

A dedicated GPU plus better CPU for only 150$ more than what I paid....

Going back to being laptop-less for the time being

This laptop truly is amazing. The CPU is literally 2.2x better than my previous hp pavilion (exact same laptop, inferior specs) that I bought at the end of 2019 (3550H), at only $13 more.

It's still a good price at $800, but damn I kind of wish I bought two at $663. Didn't know it was this good. I ended up giving my old pavilion to my dad, but if I got 2 of these he'd be sitting with a laptop twice as good.

This looks like a good price. I was looking for a gaming laptop for my son and ended up spending twice this on a Dell, but it hasn't been delivered yet. He mostly plays F1 2021 and it recommends 16gb and a faster processor, but now I'm wondering if this will do? I'd love to save some money if this is adequate and not a noticeable difference...thx

Faster processor?
The 5600H is an awesome high mid-range gaming cpu.
The GTX1650 will bottleneck long before the 5600H becomes an issue.

Too bad that it doesnt come with 16gb, or at worst with one 8gb sodim... having to get two 8gb's to make it 16 is going to add over $100 to the price.

And of the reviews says this:
"I did acquire 2X8gb 3200Mhz sodimms via HP and Crucial web sites and although they work, they are not running at advertised speed (only 2667Mhz). The laptop is VERY limited in the BIOS tool as the BIOS is locked down so trying to enable XMP is not possible. Even the Ryzen Master software to aid in tweaking RAM is NOT compatible with the Ryzen CPU."

It sounds strange however.

I don't know much about it, but the Dell G15 I bought has the "11th Generation Intel® Core™ i7-11800H" and the "NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ 3060 6GB GDDR6". Maybe this HP is enough? Thx

It really depends on the SODIMM. 2666MHz is the min speed on MOST new ram, but some can go even lower to 2133. My HP stream is supposed to run at 2666, but it runs at 3200MHz. There's no option in the bios to configure memory speeds on it. (Most laptops don't let you modify memory timings)

The Dell has a much better GPU. The HP has a better CPU.

If the plan is to game, and this is your son's dedicated PC, I'd stick with the Dell. You can't really upgrade these things in a meaningful way, so it's better to buy the best you can within your budget.

I think I did see the thread when this laptop was 663, but it was already OOS. It beats the price of alot of the clearance laptops on Visions. The only thing better would be the Walmart clearance deals, but those things are impossible to get.

My old pavilion came with 1x8gb stick while this one came with 2x4gb. Seeing as 2x4 is better performance, I'm glad they made the upgrade. If I want 16gb ram, I'll just sell the 2x4 sticks this comes with. They run at 3200MHz.

It sounds like the reviewer bought 1.35v XMP RAM. Very few laptops support that kind of RAM and will default to a lower "safe" speed if it's installed. XMP RAM is sometimes advertised as "compatible" with laptops that don't support it, so people are often disappointed or think their laptop/RAM is broken when it runs at a slower speed or timing.

You'll basically see that same review on almost every listing of XMP RAM.

The i7 is more powerful than the 5600H but not by that much.
The RTX3060 however will mop the floor with the GTX150
