[Best Buy] MSI Modern Laptop - 14" 1080p/i3-10110U/8GB/128GB - $499

Warm deal on an OK laptop.

$500 for i3-10110U, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, and ultrabook form factor.
Comes with a fairly bright 1080p screen and a decent selection of ports too.

Agree.
If you need something now, this might be decent given current pricing etc. I'd hope it's upgradeable, but at least it's 8/128 and not 4/64, which I wouldn't touch with a 10-ft pole unless you can upgrade.

10th gen i3 is still pretty decent, and a big jump over previous i3. As always, your use will determine if it's sufficient, but if you're not gaming, and just doing "normal" things (browsing, email, zoom, MS Office, etc.) this should be more than adequate for some time.

Agree, plus this one comes with a web cam not like the ROG

Bought one for my wife since she's going back to school. It's actually an excellent laptop, great screen, excellent build, very snappy performance.
Maybe I can build a house with all the boxes from stuff I've bought off RFD

Hmm, 2.5 years old dual core CPU and only 120GB storage for $500?I'd spend a little bit more and get something like this which would be good at least for few years.

For a 3rd grader, I'd get something similar to this. Use WAREHOUSE50 promo code to knock another $50, so the total would be $359+tax.

If budget allows, this HP laptop is a much better value and will last a good few years. Better processor, 4x the SSD storage. All around a much better value. Depends on use case I suppose. If using mainly for some browsing and documents / emails either will do.

i5, touchscreen and better build quality but 64 eMMC is a non-starter for me personally

If your kid's potentially using it as a offline multimedia laptop as well, this one's not bad since it comes with 512 SSD for ~$500

but I don't think you can upgrade the RAM/SSD... 4/64 is atrocious these days if not upgradeable. I'd rather have the i3 with 8GB than i5 with 4GB. But again, specific use case may differ, but for normal use, I'd argue the higher RAM will make a more meaningful benefit.

It's blasphemy to me to pair that CPU with only 4/64 and no option to upgrade :(

There's a deal for an HP around $325... its' only 4/128, but both are upgradeable, and there are two RAM slots, so you can get by with just buying a second 4GB for cheap ($20-25 on sale).
This is exactly the machine I got for my nephew and my mom (it was a bit cheaper on Boxing Day), and for their needs, more than adequate for at least a few years to come.

If you are still looking shoppers has an laptop with Ryzen 5 8GB ram and 256GB storage for $529 but you just 20x PC points so basically 30% off the price of laptop. That's a decent machine and works out to be a great price if you collect/use PC points.

How does that work? You get 20x PC points instantly and you can redeem those against the $529 price? Is that an IPS touchscreen model?

Couldn't find pictures of the internals online, but the spec sheet on MSI's website says it has one SO-DIMM slot and one M.2 slot (both occupied), so both RAM and SSD should be upgradable. Dual core and single channel RAM is a bit unfortunate in 2022, but it looks like an okay deal for for everyday computing - lightweight, decent build quality (for this price range), and 1080p IPS display.
