[Best Buy] Nikon D3500 - $484.99 (PM against The Source, Amazon.ca)

The Source and Amazon has the same kit listed for $499.99 (possible boxing week pricing but unsure as it does not specify). You may be able to PM @ BestBuy to bring the price down to $485. Price has been cheaper in the past, but I haven't seen it dip to $449.99 for a while. Solid shooter with good lens options. I still use a D3300 because it does what I need, but it's still a decent price for an entry-level camera.

We need some lens deals! It has been quite dry for lens sales throughout the last few years

Is this the best opening-price DSLR? Is there better value on the market for a first time buyer?

They cut a few features from the 3500, most notably external mic in which makes it even worse for video. The new af-p lenses are at least quieter while focusing though.

The 3500 is practically a downgrade from the 3400, both are more than enough for a starting shooter though.

D3400 no longer has the mic input, only D3300 does. I don't think D3500 has cut any features compared to D3400, in fact Nikon has added to it. D3500 supports wifi, while D3400 only has Bluetooth. You can also remotely control the camera through the app with D3500 and you can't do that with D3400.

The new AF-P lens are also a downgrade, no external VR on/off switch. So when you put it on the tripod, need to use internal controls to turn off VR. This lens series shows cost cutting and no backward compatibility for D3200/D5200 and models before that.

We got one when we had ours and it takes good pics. but rarely bring it out with the million things we already need to carry. And since a lot of photos are candid and on the spot, make sure you both have good phones with good cameras before spending the money on a dsr.

D3400 also comes with the AF-P lens.

Right I was confusing the 3300 and 3400 with the 3400 and 3500

Yeah, the D3400 was a big disappoinent when it was released. However, as I said in OP, I still shoot with a D3300. The biggest difference is the lenses. Problem is, acquiring compatible lenses can be a chore. D3300 is compatible with new lenses via firmware update however, a couple colleagues have said doing so saw issues arise in old lenses where sometimes the lenses would not be recognized. So I haven't updated the firmware on mine.
