[Best Buy] Seagate 8TB backup plus hub $199.99! (door crasher)

I was one of the RFDers who bought this at the $249 during BF...guess I should have waited!

It's listed as a Door Crasher, so i'm not sure if you can buy online (i think i did last year?)
starts 7pm on Dec 24th.

amazing price on 8TB for $200!
from the last discussion, it sounds like these drives can be taken out of the enclosure to be put into towers.

Are there any links out there for opening this unit up? I want something to stick inside my PC but couldn't find a guide on this style.

Is there any real issue with an SMR drive (not sure if this is) apart from slow write speeds? If not then I guess this will be great for a media server storage (yes I know about backups and HDD maker comparisons).

There's no way that you have 8 TB of data:

- worth backing up
But also
- you don't mind losing

If your're going to buy this one, I'd leave it in the case. I can almost guarantee the the internal disc is an Archival drive. Not built for constant use. I've got a couple for my Plex server, and the USB hub is surprisingly handy.

I have over 100TB in my studio, since I make videos and animation for a living. I've had single projects that are 3TB -- so i'd need 6TB just to have a backup. And in production, we TRIPLE backup for insurance purposes...do the math.

Do they come with a good software for backing up all my devices/data in the home network? I was thinking of buying NAS, but main purpose is for back up, can it replace a NAS if my primary purpose is to back up (and possibly share media files among all my home devices)

Are you implying that these are unreliable and if we get it, we are accepting that our data might get lost?

Tempting if I could rip these out and still maintain individual drive warranty

It's true, for whatever reason, there are always deals on the external but not internal HDs... But I've always managed to format the external ones (sometimes, at the expense of destroying the circuit attached to them) and then putting them into my PC box. :)

+ a 12TB NAS. That being said, just bought a bunch of 5tb drives from newegg for $160. Dont know what are the odds of being able to grab one from bestbuy, let alone more than one. Who knows how much qty they have.
