Avoid SMR since you have chance to get PMR at this moment...

SMR.
Wish HDD companies would clearly label their drives.

Assuming it's the WD drive at Costco linked below, you get an extra year warranty on the WD which sells it for me alone!

Everyone has opinions in these drive threads, but like most, every Seagate drive I've ever owned has died just off warranty, every WD I've owned is still operating or was still operating at the time I sold/gave it away to upgrade it.

I bought this same drive from Staples last month for around this price after tax, and it has been decent as a drive directly connected to my router's USB 3.0 port. I use it to dump various types of media to so they can be centrally retrieved.

Speeds are slow (router USB speed limts to around 25MB/s) but this is is still a little faster than my internet connection, and plenty fast enough to stream 4K Bluray movies across the network.

SMR isn't great but there are use cases like mine where the savings over a PMR are worth it.

All we need now is someone quoting a Backblaze test and this thread is complete!

Just curious how your setup goes with the drive connected to the router directly. Is it a special router with such feature?
Also, I wonder does that mean the HD is on constantly? Even if you haven't been accessing it for days? Would that shorten its life?

I've had bad luck with seagate drives too. I thought it was just me. Good to know.
Costco it is.

I'd had issues with all drives. WD, Seagates, Hitachi, Maxtor, Fujitsu, Toshiba. No HD is bulletproof.

I just bought this since since i need more space. Slow as heck, but for $149.99 for a 8TB... im willing to compromise that speed.

This is my 3rd Seagate in my rig. Ironwolf, Barracuda Pro and this. We'll see how this goes
