Best ER in the GTA?

What are your top 3 choices for hospital ER departments in the GTA?

I've been getting complications from a chronic condition all year and my family doc / Telehealth keep sending me to the ER. This time it's for some kind of imaging scan, maybe an MRI. I've been around enough by now to know that ERs aren't created equal. Which ones in the GTA have the most resources and hopefully lowest wait times? Do you know of any rankings for ER dept's? Does it depend on neighborhood or maybe downtown versus suburbs? Any hints would be much appreciated!

I wonder how the newly open Cortellucci Vaughan hospital is? Facility wise, it sounds to be top edge.

Not the best, the worst I know in the GTA is Scarborough Grace (through many personal experiences with family and friends)

It’s run by Mackenzie Health though...they don’t exactly have a great track record at their other location.

While i tend to agree an explanation of why Sunnybrook would be useful.
In fact in Rand McNally they wear hats on their feet and hamburgers eat people

when the intel van attack, where did people go?? closer hospital is north york general........ people do get more than trauma injury going to hospitals. what other reasons do people go to hospitals? i remember seeing a guy that was coughing out blood complaint (smoker + june/july 2019 aka precovid stuff). the emergency room was very understaffed that night due to another emergency :(. Always have extra layer of winter clothing even in summer when going to the ER.

Your post history mentions neurosurgery, so assuming this is the same condition I'd be included to say either Toronto Western, Sunnybrook, or St. Michael's because that's where the most expertise in this area exists. But really, and only speaking in generalities because I don't know the specifics of your particular condition, your doctor should probably be referring you to an appropriate specialist if you need a sustained higher level of care, rather than just sending you to an emergency room.

First question: Why is your family doctor sending you to the ER and not referring you directly to specialists?

That was the first question I asked myself - but since the OP asked for referrals to ERs I decided to go with the flow. I agree with you 100%.

i remember in my situation the family doctor could not help. my family doctor is the type that is "if you are not broken broken, you can leave me alone :)". Sometimes you got to take care of yourself differently than family doctor. trust the real professionals?

I guess it's that bigger hospitals with a good "name" attract highly skilled talent and may have a bigger "budget".

When I tore 2 ligaments in my elbow I went to Scarborough Grace. The orthopedic surgeon, who I knew thru my work, straight up referred me to another surgeon at St. Mike's. Says a lot.

It depends on the chronic condition. E.g. for a cardiac condition you want to go to a hospital that does catherization and bypass surgery, like Trillium Mississauga Queensway. For an serious eye condition, go straight to say, Toronto Western that has a large ophthalmology dept. And so on. Do a bit of research to find the best fit.

It's a long story. I have a rare condition (spontaneous CSF leak) that affects 1 in 50,000 or so and the Canadian system doesn't have good resources for dealing with it. Some procedures were done (incl a lumbar puncture) that created complications. Then the specialist (a radiologist) said he has "no idea" why I'm getting complications and sent me to the ER. All other doctors say "go back to your specialist", he says he has "no idea". I've been to the ER 6 times by now. The real answer is to go get treated in the US where the real specialists are, but getting OHIP coverage is a next to impossible.

Thanks everyone for the helpful input above.

If the specialist doesn't know, then he should be referring you another specialist who may know. Demand to be referred again.

That makes logical sense, but sadly getting it done in practice is a huge pain. I've seen/consulted with more than 20 doctors so far. The latest referral is for a neurologist who has a wait list measured in years. When you have a rare condition the game really changes unfortunately. You really get to see the huge gaps that exist in the healthcare system and how many people are regularly getting abandoned. Did I mention that my condition was misdiagnosed for 8 years, between 2012 and 2020?
