Best methods to enhance smoothies

I'm trying to drink more homemade fruit drinks as meals as part of my new diet plan but I find the frozen fruits you buy are not ripe so they don't have a lot of flavour. Before I used Tropicana's OJ but that's way too sweet and probably too much sugars. Do you just add water as the base and learn to enjoy its natural flavours?

Artificial sweeteners are life changing

Sugar twin tastes the best, Splenda/stevia don’t do much unless you add a ton

You could use milk/almond milk too

Try different brands of frozen fruit, some are more sweet/flavourful than others. For example, I like PC frozen cherries more than the brand offered at Costco.

Yup, that's the brand I buy (PC) as well since they go on sale a lot and I shop at No Frills a lot. I find them pretty much the same across the board (PC, Compliments, Food basic housebrands)

I did use almond milk but I read the sweetened ones are very high in sugar like Tropicana OJ are. I would like to strictly develop the tolerance for naturally sweetened from the fruit themselves like drinking coffee black. Salt and refined sugars are the new evil.
I'm eating way more bananas and fruits in general than I have ever in my life. I keep a bag of mixed nuts in my car and bag on me in case I get some hunger shakes.

I hate to sound like a person who's only cooking repertoire is boiling water but I'm eating all kinds of weird stuff like beans and it's wonderful. Adding suraccha seems to give a lot of dishes flavour I'm finding.

Kind of left out an important bit of information:

Can you eat raw eggs in a shake?
Adding raw egg to a protein shake increases its protein content, but you would be further ahead by eating a hard-boiled egg with the shake instead. To reduce your risk of Salmonella infection, select organic, free-range eggs and consume them while they are fresh.

Also you don't add any water?

About 1/1,000,000 eggs have salmonella. I think it's something like 10 lifetimes you'd need to live and eat eggs to come across an egg with salmonella. I don't have a direct reference as this was told to me in a presentation by the CFIA's head 'egg dude'.

If you're worried about it (don't worry about it) use pasteurized egg whites.

Have you ever tried doing veggie smoothies? I usually do this as there's less sugar. Though I mix veggies with some bottled tomato juice so there's the salt consideration.

What's with all the salt/sugar hysteria on RFD?

I bet most people suckered into this fear could stand to improve their diets by increasing the amount of whole foods they consume. It's not that you're (general) eating too much salt and sugar. It's likely that you're eating too many processed foods. If most people just worried about improving on the basics (ie infographic below) they'd likely solve most of their diet 'problems'. Don't major in the minors ;) Get the boulders in place before worrying about the pebbles.

It's the new year resolution hysteria. People just want to make some semblance of an effort to be healthy; only i my case I should have made and stuck to one. Every time I take my shirt off, I see shamoo and tying my shoe lace has been proven difficult as of late.

I wish I was kidding.

Looks like my years of neglect has caught up with me.

the same sugar in your tropicana OJ you're avoiding is the same sugar in the blended smoothie you're having

When you say enhance do you mean for nutrition or taste?

I use frozen fruits so m6 smoothies are more like slushes, and people love them.

Taste
- coconut water and mango juice (or whatever) coconut water has less sugar
- over ripe fruit, I have my own fruit that I forget to eat on time, but cut up and frozen it’s great to mix with smoothies, and saves some money. I cut it in chunks and throw it on a cookie sheet to freeze, from over ripe bananas, mangos, sad looking berries, etc.
- a small splash of vanilla acts as a flavour enhancer and makes things sweeter without sugar
- flavoured yougurt

Nutrition
- protein powder
- veggies, our smoothing are about 1/2 veggies any thing we have as i have a good blender
- flax seed, or chia seed, if you eat the chia sit a little bi, it acts as a thickener too

Carton of pasturized egg whites, though I haven’t done this but it would work
On a 'smart' device that isn't always so smart. So please forgive the autocorrects and typos. If it bothers you, then don't read my posts, but don't waste my time correcting me. If you can get past the typos, then my posts generally have some value.

Raw eggs are fine no matter what kind, did you not see the movie Rocky?

I wouldn't add water, that make it watery. You can add some kefir or milk or yogurt or cottage cheese or really anything you like. But just eggs themselves make it creamy and once blended with some frozen fruit it's quite good depending on your tastes.

I find just frozen fruits makes for a slushy and of course that will melt but much, much too thick for my liking. The tomato juice (v8? motts?) and pine apple (was this mentioned?) juice is a good substitute for water. I still don't mind OJ but like I said, it kicks the sweetness up a lot.

Some of the vegan guys just use water from what I've seen. Speaking of, does adding making celery juice have such great benefits? The VP (vegetable police) said it regulates your stomach acid? I though celery themselves were just made of mostly water and had little to no nutritional value.

By enhancing I mean make it more flavourful without the added sugars. If you've ever had those Vietnamese smoothies they add a lot of sugar base; as far as trying to replicate them at home goes, the sweetness level is night and day; then I learned the restaurants all use a type of sweetener base.

As far as coconut water, all the tubular cartons they sell in the store all tastes just like funny water. Inherently the juice of a coconut aren't very flavourful either. The stuff in cans like Grace, there's got to be sugars and artificial sweeteners in there.

If you get pure coconut water there's no added sugars or sweeteners, whether canned or tetra packed, Grace or any other brand. You can check the ingredients list (not the Nutrition box) to be sure.

From Grace's website
Why does Grace 100% Pure Coconut Water have sugar in its nutrition information?
The sugar on the Grace 100% Pure Coconut Water nutrition facts label is the naturally occurring sugar that all coconuts contain. We do not add any sugar. The coconut is cut open, the water is flash pasteurized and packaged for your consumption. It’s that simple! Nothing added, no preservatives and nothing taken away for the best tasting coconut water.

Every morning I make a smoothie for breakfast,

Banana
Fat free plain yogurt
unsweetened vanilla almond milk
scoop protein powder, vanilla or chocolate

Sometimes I add hemp hearts, flax, etc.

But a good idea for frozen fruit is to buy it and freeze it yourself. Pineapple, cut it up and freeze on a baking sheet, put into a ziplock and use as needed. You can do the same with any fruit. We buy the frozen Kirkland blueberries and they are really good, never had a bad one.
That's my 2cents worth

Try actually reading the article you quote...
It seems the one that lacks critical thinking is yourself ...which would explain the predicament you’re in.
Tropicana spokesperson Michael Torres said in an emailed statement: "Tropicana remains committed to offering great-tasting 100 percent orange juice with no added sugars or preservatives. We take the faith that consumers place in our products seriously and are committed to full compliance with labeling laws and regulations."
