I'm very happy with my Asus AC86U, but it's closer to $200 in price. For $300 you could probably find something better with more bandwidth, dual 5ghz perhaps.

Your router 66u has a 890,0 mW power emission in the 5 GHz band, wich is 89% of the maximum allowed by law in north america (both FCC and IC)
Since AC norm does not exist in the 2.4 GHz you will not gain a big diffrence in range with a new router.

Do you have a multiple story house ?

I have the same router and it's on one side of the house. The other side of the house gets wifi but not very strong. I was thinking of upgrading as well... Are you saying i won't get any improvements if I upgrade the router?

Can vouch for the Asus AC86U. Tremendously fast and really good coverage. Priced pretty good as well.

When it comes to range, some of you should be looking at access points and not necessarily replacing the entire router.

For instance, you can grab a Ubiquiti AC-Lite access point for around $119. If you can somehow run ethernet to other parts of the house, you can buy multiple AC-Lite's and effectively setup other units to cover the dead zones. There are other ways to like powerline networking but ethernet would be the best bet.

You don't even have to get rid of the current router. Just disable the built in wireless and use the access points.
