Best way to makeover these basement stairs?

Originally I was planning to follow this DIY for my basement stairs, because it looks simple enough and was cheap.

But then I realized my stair stringer has the nosing profile cut into it too!

Should I give up his method and look for something like this Cap-a-tread being sold in Toronto?

Sand it down (100 Grit ... then 400 Grit).

Use some caulking and fill in the visible seams.

Then paint in high gloss ultra white.

Done.

How do you find that on homedepot.ca? It doesn't appear in search for zamma, cap a tread, nor laminate stair tread. I need something like this in hickory.

And, yes, you should go with something like this. I've watched that exact video, and many more. I'm dealing with a similar situation as you.

You can still do that ... paint the sides ultra high gloss white ... and a dark stain of the stairs to have the contrast.

Get new solid oak treads, have to cut nosing off existing treads. Add 3/4” to the height of your current threads, if you are still under 7 3/4”, you are good to go.

Measure, cut, test fit, number, stain, varnish, pl premium, heavy weight to avoid the use off nails.

You can also install and then stain, just requires a little more patient.

It's going to be a lot of labour to refinish the stairs you have to get the wood to be "stained".

You could do a lot just with some good wood filler, and some patient painting of the treads in a contrasting color.

You could use the tread capping, but in this case, I think painting would be just as effective.

Depending on how your flooring is set up at top/bottom, you could also do as lamin suggests and just trim off the current tread nosing and add in new treads and risers (finished and stained as you want.) Still not an easy job, but much easier than trying to sand down your current painted treads.

Does anyone know what wood these stair treads are? They're in my basement so I don't know the quality of these treads. With so many knots would I still be able to sand down and stain? (this is taken from underside as the top is painted white)

Why not remove the paint on the tread and bullnose part and stain it properly?
