What's the best way to deal with rail? I contacted CN and CP directly. Their quotes are $2000 and $3000.

$2-$3K sounds perfectly reasonable to me for moving something this big and presumably heavy across the country.

Considering cost to get container to/from the terminal it might be cheaper to contract with a freight forwarder....they get a better rate than you can finangle from railways or might ship directly by transport truck.

Yes that's very reasonable. I pay 1/4-1/6 of that for smaller loads to be hauled in a truck only 800 miles.

Call these guys, I have tried them and they are good. I shipped a few things to the US and it was much much cheaper with them.
