Best Western's Low Rate Guarantee is a Scam

I found a night at BW Halifax for $10 cheaper. I filled out the details, even sent screenshots as I made a reservation with priceline (the cheaper company for the exact same hotel, room). I followed all details and rules and BW will not honour their so-called guarantee.

1st email from BW:

We have reviewed your Low Rate Guarantee Claim. The claim has been
denied as: we are showing Priceline.com does not have the standard 2
queen bedroom available. Per the Low Rate Guarantee Terms and Conditions
the room type and rate has to be available to book at the time of
review. I am sorry this is not the outcome you were looking for

I proved this false, next excuse.

2nd email from BW:

I am sorry it was denied and I can understand how concerning this may
be. When our office is reviewing the claim the room type and rate has to
be showing available for our office to book the reservation. Due to the
room type booked not being available at the time we reviewed the claim,
it remains denied.

I proved that wrong and next excuse:

3rd email BW:

Dear ?????????????,

Thank you for contacting Best Western Hotel and Resorts, to submit a Low Rate Guarantee claim for your upcoming reservation at Best Western Plus Chocolate Lake Hotel and we appreciate you taking the time to contact us. I reviewed your claim again and the room type you booked is not available on the 3rd party site. The claim has been denied.

Please visit bestwestern.com/deals-offers/special-rates/low-hotel-rates-terms.pdf to review the terms and conditions of the Low Rate Guarantee program.

If you have any questions or need further assistance, please let us know and we appreciate the opportunity to be of service.

My response after 6 emails (by me) and 3 phone calls:

I just got off with phone with one of your agents who agreed that the room was available and $2 cheaper at priceline. I just checked priceline and 1 room is still available right now. This is starting to seem fraudulent on behalf of Best Western and I will continue to share all documents online to let others see this lack of transparency/truthfulness on BWs part. I was first told the room was different, I proved that wrong. I was next told the room was sold out yesterday, I proved that wrong. I was next told the room was not cheaper and I proved that untrue with screenshots and your own BW CS rep agreeing with me that the priceline room was available and at $125.83 CAD on the phone less than 1 Hour ago, while I paid $127.86 directly with BW. I have sent 6 emails and had 3 phone calls thus far and am extremely disappointed and feel cheated by your company at this point. This was to be a 50th birthday celebration and we planned to have it at your hotel.

Please make this right - I am extending an olive branch as I am a person of honor and truth. I am hoping your company is the same.

This is what I paid BW directly:

Reservation Amount 109.00
Other Taxes & Fees 18.86*
Total Stay 127.86 CAD

True, but it is for $10, pride, and a $100USD BW gift card.

They match the rate and send you a $100 USD BW gift card. I've used the best rate guarantee with Marriott brand hotels a fair amount of times globally and recently. With a bit of looking around/flexibility, you can normally score 25% off the lower rate you found with a claim.

Talked again, BW is now claiming BW rate is cheaper (!!). - hello email proof..... so many excuses, so little time. Lies, and fraudulent behavior. Marriott has always been great for service and facilities, I think its safe to say we are booking with them, now and in the future. Rude, condescending woman in CS as well. Bye Best Western.........thanks for wasting my time.

Lots of hate of for BW, but there are some decent and clean properties, especially out east and in the smaller towns.

And around the world. Best western buys up tons of hotels that are pretty good location wise then adds their brand of corporate hotel process and management process often adding online booking which is lacking or unreliable in some places. Leading to a hotel that’s more palatable for a western traveller.

Best western is associated with shooting meth in the USA but it’s not true for all their properties.

love it. Had a GREAT 2 nite stay at Marriott Halifax Harbourfront. Strongly recommended, unlike this other dishonest chain with the letters BW.

I just came back from Best Western Lockport. It was so underserviced. Outside garbage not emptied for days. Everything just looks dirty. There is only one person at most times. The guy says government assistance keeps most workers at home.

BTW, these hotel "Best Price Guaranteed" are worthless. For Hilton, I tried to get them to match Priceline. They say they only price match Hilton.com. What does that mean? When you have a booking and you check Hilton.com and the price goes down, you can get a price match. But they do not price match any other vendors.

So shop for best prices. If price is almost the same ($5-10), I'll book direct. In my case, it was $150 USD vs. $100 CAD. So I went Priceline.

Never had a problem with price matching
BUT … I didn’t go thru with the booking on an alternate site
(I don’t believe that’s how this perk is actually meant to work )

It’s always been a case of calling the Hotel Location …front desk
Providing proof
Then the front desk doing an override / price adjustment
For a booking done direct with them

We ALWAYS BOOK DIRECT
And belong to the Hotel Loyalty Programs
Consequently we ALWAYS get the best price

More so if you add in points, perks, status etc

IMO Hilton & Best Western have 2 of the best Loyalty Programs going
We get tons of great deals, perks, free upgrades … PLUS Points = Money

Loyalty Programs are a game
It takes a bit of time to learn the game
But it’s beyond worth it in the long run
All my money works harder for me cuz of loyalty programs
Just like it does being invested … vs stuffed under my mattress

Yep, I know of very little hotel chains that provide loyalty benefits (or any other things such as a low rate guarantee) on third party bookings.

I booked a room directly with BW, then through PL to prove the price discrepancy. Then they weezled out of it. Alas, I agree investing is the way to go.

I learned this the hard way, i was in Ottawa for a few days (pre covid, how innocent we were back then) and the hotel had a promo that if you booked two nights you get a third free. But only if booked at the hotel and not on Priceline or Expedia or anyone else.
Front desk dude said check the price on the third party site then call the hotel to see if they will match it or have a better promo.
