I wish those fish will be able to survive with their baitcoolintheshade wrote: ↑ Capital One nerfs all their good cards, refuses credit limit increase requests, and caters solely to their bad credit customers that pay them an annual fee and lots of interest.
They couldn't care less about retaining their customers, as there will be a whole new pool of fresh fish to nibble on the bait.

Which is surprising since their US cards are fairly well designed.ccya965041 wrote: ↑ "Where's the designer? Oh well, let's put the company logo on the card and call that a day!"
No wonder they always mail those paper card in the box and ask to join them with paper application forms.
On second thought, maybe not so surprising considering their US credit card offerings are way better than what we have here in general. Clearly they only care about sub-prime lending in Canada.

Subprime doesn’t mean they don’t offer good cards. Just that they offer it primarily to low income and relatively bad credit clients. It’s a niche since big banks don’t want this customer base and smal banks can’t afford to have it.lemon0fish wrote: ↑ They were for a very long time, but in recent years they have introduced some interesting offerings, especially the Venture X and Savor cards.

As was mentioned, they used to be geared towards the subprime market, but now they also cater to a different market. Their Venture line of cards require "excellent" credit, and the Venture X card specifically, requires a minimum CL if $10k.
But I'm not a fan of the look of any of their cards.

The Amex Essential may also be getting a redesign. The new card design is shown on the page that describes every Amex card, but not elsewhere apparently.
Edit: The image URL is /content/dam/amex/ca/en/credit-cards/Essential-Card---New-Card-Art-2022/bold_plat_essential_ca_960x608.png, which indicates that they may be late on this design change .

Because they're a money-maker, generate lucrative service charges, annual fees, earn interest on secured balances, and they have to pay interest in any cash-secured balances they owe. It's no secret the credit card companies still refer to those who pay off their balances every month as "deadbeats" because of the low to no revenue/profit they generate, a point @dragonfyre refuses to acknowledge in his or her quest to obtain better (yet costly!) rewards for his or her credit card.coolintheshade wrote: ↑ Capital One nerfs all their good cards, refuses credit limit increase requests, and caters solely to their bad credit customers that pay them an annual fee and lots of interest.

With brick-and-mortar retail dying and so too private label credit cards and affinity credit cards, being replaced, in part, by rewards partnerships with the prepaid credit cards, Capital One likely realized there's no point in trying to compete for these lower margin businesses. Similarly, with the PC Financial and Canadian Tire Bank dominating the day-to-day credit card transaction market, there was no point in trying to compete with them, either. TD's MBNA, on the other hand, has tried, foolishly, in my view, to hold a "stay the course" strategy, but with diminishing returns such that, mark my words, within five years, it will cease to exist in Canada as a standalone entity and any remaining MBNA branded cards will be folded into the TD Canada Trust card program.
Cheers,
Doug

And they're a subsidiary of Bank of Montreal. Perhaps they could teach BMO a lesson in credit card design! They truly have some of the worst looking cards.MayorOfToronto wrote: ↑ A basic design done right.... unlike the CapOne cards lol
Too bad Discover acceptance is almost non-existent outside of the U.S.!

Oops, my bad. They bought Diners Club International, a U.S.-based payment network of comparable size and utility to Discover.

Interesting how the black-and-silver Infinite card is the only one in a vertical orientation. Kind of like Tangerine Mastercard, the World one is vertical and the regular one not.
Also notable on the other three Laurentian cards is the placement of the VISA word mark on the bottom left instead of bottom right. Has that been seen before?

The regular Tangerine card is vertical as well now, it's actually better-looking than the World card (not that either is particularly appealing):
I've never seen it bottom-left, so I looked up the rules and it's the only corner NOT permitted by Visa, the space is reserved for the cardholder name. I wonder how they got the designs past Visa, or more likely they didn't check...

They seem to have created the same problem Tangerine had with the original design of their Mastercard - they have arrow-shapes pointing away from the direction you insert the card into the reader. Not a well thought-out design IMO.
