Blankets donation for needy

Hi, We are a small group of friends who occasionally do food and clothing donations. We usually but packaged food from costco etc and drop them at food banks or shelters.

Currently we are planning to donate blankets. we brought around 25 blankets from walmart and looking for opportunities where there is a real need. Our wish is to handover these personally to needy.

Any suggestions or ideas are highly appreciated.

Real iconic blankets are made out of 100% wool aka "fire blankets" have stood the test time ...pretty hard these days to find real blankets for sale other than in military barracks or army surpluses !

Your blankets probably are not going to be used out of doors for the homeless ... if that was your original thought
Nice gesture... but probably not warm / sturdy enough (sleeping bags would be a better fit)

Where your blankets might make a difference is a Women’s Shelter
As eventually the women & kids there have to strike out on their own and set up house
And often they come to a shelter with nothing more than the clothes on their backs

They make do moving forward typically with a lot of used / second hand stuff
New Blankets / Bedding would be an AWESOME gift

As most Women’s Domestic Abuse Shelters operate quietly out of sight... cannot givevout Addresses etc for safety reasons
The best way to make contact is to reach out to your local Police Dept Community Resource Officer
They’ll do the delivery... or put you in contact with someone who will meet you to do the pick up

That is quite good information. My friends appreciated your feedback. Just before your reply, we dropped around 35 blankets at Salvation army shelter @ steels. We got few more left since more friends joined us. I will try to contact peel PD resources.

We did tree planting couple of times. But it felt like a corporate event / social responsibility than a volunteer opportunity.

Maybe try contacting Susan Hay at Global network, she covers a lot of human interest stories, she might have leads you can follow
