Not sure where you are located, but I would give the APA or Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) a call and tell them that the contract was misrepresented and you wanted to remove the coverage. They can provide some guidelines. If you are in another province, you can check with them. Once you have it, call the dealership and tell them you don't want it and to adjust the cost and you want the $$ back (not the money on file so you have to go to them for service, etc.) You will eventually get it taken off after the run around and time lost. Unfortunately, this is how these Shysters work.

Ok thanks. I have to go pick the car up today- so am going to try to talk to the dealership before I go.. I did already send an email to them as well- in what I said it wasn't explained properly- they really didn't explain it at all. .. . but will call the BCMVIC a call and tell them what happened... I really don't mind getting the service from them, or some other things for the car (roof racks etc) I was planning too anyways, so that may make it easier.. I will tell them when I talk to them I would take all that service to another dealership.. Hassle.. but worth it..

Wish me luck

When you pick up the car you need to sign all of the paperwork to finalize the sale. You don't own the car yet. They may get pushy by ultimately they want a sale and will work with you.

My girlfriend just bought a new car and they tried to get her on all of the same insurance crap the day she agreed to buy.

Also do a full walk around and make sure you are happy with the condition of the vehicle. Any paint defects you want addressed, do BEFORE you leave the dealership.

couple of parking lot dings that your don't want to claim on insurance, stone chips/dings, hit the curb couple of times and tire/rim issue, etc. Just little stuff that adds up. Especially since this is 5 years of coverage.

While I may not pay for it, it may be of some value and since the OP has already signed up for it and will probably get a lot of grief from dealer and husband out cancelling, it becomes a toss up.

With my wife and some of the things she does/doesn't do, I wouldn't care is she signed up for it as I am confident it would more than pay for itself over 5 years.

Will see how much hassle the dealer gives me. My husband is fine about it.. he had no idea.. Thinks I am obsessing too much about it.. but understands why I want to cancel. But glad you don't think it is a total scam.. The main problem is we live 1 hour away from the dealership and I can't see driving over that amount of time to get a tire patched.. especially on a spare tire over a mountain..

I already signed everything- all the paperwork is done.. it wasn't til we were waiting for car insurance that they told me I couldn't have the car until Monday, as it hadn't been inspected in their garage..
Then they sent me home with a lower model loaner.. that I am going to have to put gas in to get back...

Please let us know how it works out. I didn't see that you were in BC, sorry about that.

As others said, I would not accept possession of the vehicle until everything is resolved. They will try to get you to take the car and then you will have to chase them down on things. I would rather get everything sorted out to YOUR satisfaction before taking the deal. When the Sales guy does not get commission, or the Finance guy does not meet their quotas, they are going to work their @ss off to make sure they can close the deal and will be pushy. Just stand your ground as you are not canceling the deal, you are looking to get the vehicle the way you want it without all the extra crap put on. Also, any dealer accessories you get CAN BE DISCOUNTED by at least 20%. Aside from government taxes and mandatory fees, EVERYTHING IS NEGOTIABLE.

Ok- that is good advice.. So I will try to deal with this morning when I call- I can see them being scammers and changing everything before I go... I am not cancelling it.. it is already signed I just want this insurance taken off. My plan/desire is to have it all dealt with and to sign anything I need to before I get it.. ... And yes- will see about the 20% lol.. Will do my best. Wish me luck..

I guess the main problem is, is that the contract is already signed.

Contract was signed but facts were not clearly disclosed. You can check this out: https://wiki.clicklaw.bc.ca/index.php?t ... ts_(11:IV)

That is good to hear. Make sure you get a cancellation number and a point of contact to follow up on it. The last thing you want is the run around (i.e. bank will say that the dealer FI has not sent the cheque, Dealer FI says that cheque was sent)

Keep a track of the amount that they are giving back as well. It goes without saying but paper trails are good.

These insurance policies are priced in a way that the house always wins. Much like a casino, in a few instances there will be some large claims where it works out for the buyer, but on a the whole you’ll claim much less than the insurance cost. I prefer to “pocket” the cost of the insurance and just pay out of pocket if any issues arise.
