Building a kids slide platform... any handyman advice??

I just bought the kids a neat "dual slide" heavy duty playground slide off Kijiji and am embarking on building a structure for it... The problem is I belong to the Tim Taylor school of handymen as opposed to the Mike Holmes type. Fortunately the slide is only 45" off the ground (at the top) so I'm not TOO worried about the kids dying in a horrific slide collapse.

My plan was to build a cedar platform 5 feet wide and 4 feet long/deep, slide out to front and stairs out the back.

- 8 foot 4x4 cedar posts on the corners
- 2x6 cedar boards for the "deck" frame and joists (16" on center)
- 5/4x6 cedar deck boards for the deck

My plan was to just use 8 foot posts and use them for the railings as they will extend "through" the deck another 51 inches (4.25ft aprox)... is this a sound idea? Are 4x4 posts good for this type of thing or are 6x6 required? I've been looking at full size deck building instructions and am not sure if this plan is over built or what. I haven't even started planning the railings or stairs yet... those seem quite a bit more complicated :(

Any thoughts apreciated!

I think you've got a good plan. Since it's not going to be 'structural' I would change the joist spacing to 20" rather than 16" (Overkill). Remember the balusters need to be a set distance apart for the railing. Check with the city building department for guidelines. The stairs you buy pre-built at home depot (the stringers at least). Something like this - http://www.homedepot.ca/product/treated ... ger/941800 But this one would leave you short in height. Talk to the building guys, they might be able to point you in the right direction for the stairs.

This would be a great project for a beginner.. Lots of info on the net and here on RFD. take your time and it will turn out great!

Kids love a fort, wouldn't take much more effort to enclose the top. PT fence boards instead of ballisters are probably cheaper, OSB roof and half pack of shingles.

Well, just to show off and for anyone who happens to search for "kids slide paltform" in the future:

Total Cost:
$400 in wood/screws/bolts
$80 for dual playground slide off kijji (sweet deal!)
$40 for some swings & chain
------------
$520 Grand Total

(not finished in the last pic, front is closed in a bit also)

Pretty easy for a non handyman! WAY more than I thought/planed to spend but it's built like a rock: 4x4's 2x6's, 1/2 inch bolts... ect. Looking at those kits from walmart they are made of toothpicks in comparison.

Might want to put side guards/handrails on those stairs and enclose the sides of the slide at the top(if you haven't already done so).

Looks great... needs guard rails like ecobuilder mentioned (insurance incase a friend comes over and falls ;) )

and I would add some angle cross members to the legs under the decking for side-side support!

Other than that - nice job!

edit - what did you end up using for the stringers on the stairs??

Yep, I'm putting rails on the stairs next, the front by the slide is now enclosed, just a opening big enough to sit down and slide. I used precut 2x6 stringers from rona, real easy to make stairs with those! Just hung the swings today!
