Buy a used car in BC, register in MB = pay GST twice \\ How to pay GST once?

Hi guys,

Situation that I am considering to buy a used car from a dealership in Vancouver who is going to charge 5% GST. That is Ok, but then I move the car to Manitoba, register and pay GST 5% again, which is weird.

Does anybody knows how to pay GST once only?
Is it possible refund GST from BC or not to pay in MB?

I found this: https://www.canada.ca/content/dam/cra-a ... 95-20e.pdf
But it says about a few participant provinces where you buy a car, and BC is not listed.

Thank you.

I don't believe you'll pay GST in Manitoba - you will pay RST only.

https://www.gov.mb.ca/finance/taxation/ ... ns/054.pdf

The BC Dealer will charge GST + BC PST, unless you provide the proper exemption documentation:

Vehicles Purchased for Use Outside BC
If your customer purchases a vehicle in BC for use outside BC, they are exempt from PST
provided all the following criteria are met.
 The vehicle is a type that is eligible for registration under the vehicle registration legislation
as defined in the Provincial Sales Tax Act (i.e. it is not a vehicle that cannot be registered)
 The vehicle is purchased for use primarily outside BC
 The vehicle will not be used in BC for a business purpose
 The vehicle will not be registered in BC
 If the purchaser is an individual, they are not a resident of BC
To claim this exemption, your customer must provide you with a completed Certificate of
Exemption – Purchase of Vehicle or Aircraft for Use Outside BC (FIN 440).

That link you have to other provinces is about HST (not GST).

Thank you for the message.

As that dealer told me that I pay the price + 5% GST.
To make 100% sure, I should probably call MPI, local MB insurance or CRA.

Update: I just called MPI and was told that in my case, I will have to pay PST only in Manitoba. So no double GST payment.
