Buying used car at a dealership, certification/1yr warranty?

So I am thinking of buying a used car and went to go see it. The car's fine and I might buy it.

However, the dealer kept on saying I should buy a certificate of purchase or something like that for 1500$ and said it would give 1year of warranty.

What is this? Is this some dealer specific thing or Kia selling it?
Also, what is the rule concerning used car purchase warranty? I read it's 30 day mechanical and some say the original warranty carries over and some say there is no warranty at all on used cars unless you purchase it separately. I'm in Quebec if it makes any difference.

For Kia, you need enhanced fire insurance more than this 1 yr warranty. Smiling Face With Open Mouth And Smiling Eyes

As for this 1 year warranty, ask them to produce the details on what this covers. Verbal promises mean nothing.

The car's original warranty will transfer over if there is any time/mileage left on it. What's the year/make and mileage of the vehicle.

Of course I will be going back and getting it all in detail, but I just wanted to know if it's something that's commonly known that should be avoided or purchased or whatever before going back.

It's a 2019 sedona with a 47000k on it. The vehicle has a Carfax from 2018 nov

You need to know exactly what it is you’re buying before agreeing to purchase the vehicle.

I would hope the CarFax is much more recent than when the car was purchased new.

Based on the year and mileage, it should still have the 5 yr 100000 km comprehensive warranty from Kia. The exceptions are wear and tear items, and if the parts that were previously repaired due to failure or accident. I would skip the 1 year warranty as I’m doubtful that it will cover much above and beyond a manufacture warranty

I meant the Carfax history starts from 2018 Nov lol. It's the most recent one from a few days ago.

find out the deductible on this 1 yr warranty, any $ limits and # of claims allowed during this 1 year, what is the process if you need to file a claim (is this a 3rd party warranty?), will you be required to produce and maintain your lists of maintenances done on the car since purchase. More importantly, what items are considered as "Exclusion" of warranty.

From Kia's own website ...

5-year/100,000 km - Worry-free comprehensive warranty covering virtually the entire vehicle. *
5-year/100,000 km - Powertrain Warranty covering the engine, transmission, axles, differentials and driveshafts.*

So, it would seem your car still has orig warranty up to Nov 2023. Would it mean the 1 year warranty covers you to Nov 2024 ?

No idea. I left a message and asked the guy to call back.

I want to ask the following:
1. remaining warranty on it, will it carry over?
2. What do you guarantee for the purchase, is it sold as is? Or is there at least a 30 day mechanical guarantee?
3. What exactly does the 1500$ certificate cover? Deductibles, exclusion, etc.
4. If I take it to my mechanic after purchase and they tell me that there's a problem with a power train, or engine, or whatever, is this covered? Or only if there's a guarantee via bullet point 2 or 3 above?

I keep reading about how I should get a mechanic to check out the car before a used car purchase, but how does that even work? The dealer wouldn't just let me drive off with the car for a few hours so I can get it checked out lol.

Also, it currently has winter tires+original rims on it. Is it common that the dealer has the summer sets as well? Or would the original owner have kept those and I would need to get them myself when the time comes?

Anything else I should know and ask before purchasing a used vehicle? I've got the Carfax report+test driven it. It had some minor dents and scratches that they will fix but it supposedly has no accident and just 1 owner. The car was brought in yesterday so we got to see it before they reconditioned it.

tell dealer to bring its car to your indy mechanic shop at an agreed day & time ... if they want to make a potential sale. Once inspected by your own mechanic, if there are bunch of concerns raised by your mechanic, then ask if the dealer will rectify them before you are to proceed the purchase. If dealer will not do any, then you should just walk away. Sorry, not walk .... run.

As for winter tires on orig rims, ask where are the summers ?

Ok so I just got confirmation that there will be 1year of the kia warranty(5yr 100000km) left on it and that 1500$ extra will certify that it's been properly inspected and is to standard and that it will extend the kia warranty by 1 more year (the exact same condition as the 5yr one offered at new car purchase).

Now, if I were to take it to a mechanic for a proper check up, I think it would be upwards of 200$ so let's say the extra year of warranty is 1300$ for the comprehensive + power train portion of it.
Is the extra year of warranty worth it for 1300$?

How long are you planning to keep the vehicle ?

Since it has 1 year left on the orig warranty, if this vehicle develops anything that may be nightmarish to keep after the orig warranty is over, you can always dump the vehicle and thereby saving you this $1500. After all, Kia is a time bomb as some will suggest and the vehicle will not have a good trade in or resale value down the roads.

We usually keep our cars til it goes to scrap so I think we are ok on that front. I looked up the fire issue but it seems like a lot of other reputable brands also have some sort of fire issues as well and I'm not too worried. Hmm, will sit on it and think about the extra 1yr warranty.
