BWM i4 FULLY-ELECTRIC GRAN COUPÉ

Have not seen anyone talked about this new EV from BMW. Maybe it’s not the best design in BMW fleet but definitely looks attractive.

Look at the spec and price, it seems to be a better choice than model 3 (Tesla super fan may downvote on this).

BMW i4 e40: $54,999, 0-100km/h 5.7sec, 484km range,
Model 3SR: $61,380, 0-100km/h 6.1sec, 430km range.
But Model 3 has long range version and probably has bigger cargo space too.
I4 can be Reserved with refundable $1500. The delivery now is for late 2023.

Update: 2023 Year model:
BMW introduced a cheaper trim i4 e35 that comes with smaller battery (70.27 kWh vs 83.9 kWh on i4 e40 and M50), the base price is 54,990 to be qualified for the Federal EV rebate and some provincial EV rebate program.
BMW i4 eDrive35: up to 418 km, 281 hp, $58,244.70 (base MSRP is 54,990)
BMW i4 eDrive40: up to 484 km, 335 hp $64,644.70 (qualifies for EV rebate)
BMW i4 M50 xDrive: up to 435 km, 536 hp $79,244.70 (not qualified for EV rebate)
Driving Assistant and some necessary features (like heated seat, power seat, comfort access) are in the Premium Essential Package, it cost 9k which seems to be way over priced. This make Tesla Model 3 more compelling now.

Paying less price is the best way to combat the inflation.

Throttle house has a new review on the i4. Overall, poor real world range, numb steering and lack of road feel were the big disappointments of it.

Many of the reviews (like this one) are tepid or mixed. This particular review concludes that it does not stand out against either BMW's own ICE vehicles or its competitor's EVs. That being said, they don't come close to trashing it. Good but not great.

My favourite segment of this particular review:

James: "This is the i4"
Thomas: "What's an i4?"
James: "For seeing"

IX seems a much better bet as an ev, despite it’s looks

Not compromised by being a conversion from ICE
Better range
More space

Going to test drive the M50 at my local dealer this Thursday. I was comparing the i4 to the M3, Polestar 2 and Volvo C40 as a replacement for my 18 Leaf and in my view it is coming out on top. I am not a fan of Telsa's styling and the supercharger network isn't a benefit for me given my use cases and the other two have lower range.

That Throttle House review seems to be the outlier among all the review videos I have watched. They did post a correction in the comments about the range value going up after driving it further. The steering and road feel is something that is always praised about the i4 when it has been compared to the M3 or P2. In comparison to an ICE BMW yeah it is probably not as good.

Or just get an actual BMW with qn I6 RWD and a slick 6MT.

Don't fall for the marketing.

I test drove an i4 and loved it. A lot of reviews are not looking at it from a price stand point. Lets be honest, the i4 is "cheap" for what it is. To me it is far better built than a Model 3. It was a great car. Then again, my reason for looking at one is for a lease, short drives and not concerned about storage. Also, I do like the styling. I may just hold out for the e40 xdrive later this year. Its a great car!

better put in a (refundable) deposit then .... otherwise, you could wait for a real long time.

I love TH, but they always forget to mention how lousy 3rd party fast charging is. As long as you're not planning on doing any cross country road trips, should still be fine.

We will be selling our BMW i3 when we get Tesla #2. It's extremely quirky and surprisingly practical, but Tesla makes far better EVs.

It's also doubled the price. iX is a dedicated EV platform with i4 is just a turning a 3 series into an EV.

Let get real here, i4 is here to get Tesla buyers into the brand. And Tesla buyers will not care about I6 6MT. And if they do, they will just do it with their 2nd or 3rd car.

i4 pricing is attractive at $5K over 330i. And if they don't cheap out on the interior, it may be the best interior EV for the price. The new grill is still ugly, at least at this time, may get used to it be the time one actually lands. :D

I doubt most Tesla buyers will be fooled. Our i3 has received exactly 0 new or improved features from software updates in the 4 years we've owned it, while the Model 3 has received dozens. As a current owner of EVs from both brands, I would NEVER recommend BMW as a viable Tesla alternative.

To save money, the Kia EV6 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 are currently the best Tesla alternatives.

Cheap, sure.

But BMW got the badge and slightly better interior material. At minimum, it's BMW's attempt at stop loss of existing customer base.

Interior is the best in its class. I will never get past the Model 3/Y interior

BMW has lost a TON of business to Tesla (even in Germany) and will likely need a bailout from the German government.

Sometimes updates isn’t always better. This is not an iPhone. Tesla sometimes put up updates that messes up the heat pump and has some really weird updates. BMW i3 is the better car no? Build quality of OEMs can’t be beat.

Cheaper is always better. Let’s not join the Elon’s cult. I guess with the Hyundai and Kia undercut in price was a good move, but many of us want to impress so hence the BMW ultimate marketing machine.

BMW is the car to drive for pick up hot women. Can’t say the same for the Hyundai.

Our i3 with 125,000km has been far less reliable than the Model 3 with 250,000km. The i3 battery also needs replacement but BMW refuses to honour the 8 year 30% degradation warranty.

I have heard they've done studies on this and BMW drivers actually get more ladies based on the vehicle badge (not kidding but wish I was).
