Everything is heavily regulated in Canada, why would domain names be any different?

But yes I hate all the hoops you have to jump through.

Thanks for spreading the word Canucklehead.

We are a new forum but off to a fine start. Our suggestions board is open if you have ideas that'll make CanadianDots.ca a more useful resource.
Got questions about CIRA? Looking to buy or sell your .ca domain names? We have some very experienced domainers on board that are generous with their knowledge and advice.

Give us a look see.

Deals?
The most recommended .ca registrar, DomainsPro has a Father's Day special running til the end of the month - 20% off their normal very competitive price.

Thanks again Canucklehead.

I have yet to see a half mature .CA market. True premium .CA domains are worth A LOT and have been sold as such; but they are VERY limited in numbers, and are in the hands of less than a dozen of big players. People who spent money on some second rate so-called "premium" names on the other hand, are more like "spending" than investing.

By the way, have any good sales actually been closed on that new .CA forum?

Agreed. The .ca market has a long way to go before anyone would consider it a mature market. For that matter the .com market isn't close to being what economists would consider mature. Then again a mature market is boring.

Not that I'm aware of. Of course we only have 7 .ca domain for sale postings and they are certainly not all "prime" domains. :cheesygri

By mature, I mean there are at least active transactions outside the small circle of industry insiders. To be fair, the .com market has grown beyond that a long time ago; or more accurately, it is now quite an aging market.

Anyway, I envy your effort to actually put up a .CA-specific forum. But you need a bit more to make it work. I know of at least a handful of failed attempts before this. Good luck.

Aware of previous attempts - try.ca and gain.ca - wish us some luck, eh :)

I'm looking for suggestions re: board topics, board rules, design, features, etc., anything that might make this attempt at a Canadian domain name forum survive and thrive.
I've left the 'Suggestions' board open to post by anyone - of course you're welcome to register and post to the other existing forums as well.

Yeah, drop in a forum for Canadian only affiliates. It's related, and likely to bring in some traffic.

See if you can negotiate a group .ca transfer or .ca domain renewal for your members. I just don't understand why .ca is so much higher than .com!

That'll get me to register!

Group discount? There was (not sure if it still works) a special discount given to a certain forum by a certain registrar. But to be honest, with the cost at the registry level at $8.50 per name year (vs. US$6 for .COM), I doubt if anything below $10 is feasible, when the .CA market is less than 1.5% of its .COM counterpart.

I agree with you up to the 1.5% comment. We shouldn't accept lower market size as an excuse or we'll end up in the same situation as we are with cell phone rates and service compared to the US.

I would imagine that the work to manage .ca is the same as administering a .com - probably less even! I'm pretty sure there isn't an issue with duties or freight or other cost-adders!

What IF people rejected .ca outright due to the uncompetitive pricing vs the value that it offers? Wonder if the registrar would think "hmm...boys I think we've milked this long enough..time to drop our prices now"!

A forum about monetization of your domain names - PPC, affiliates, etc. - is on the list for addition when it looks like the board will support more forums.

Actually the group discount for .ca reg's or transfers is something that I think might be do-able when the forums have enough members for it to make sense.
As teknoluv points out, without the volume and without the competition that exists in the .com that's going to be a tough one. I can't imagine that our small band of (currently) 32 members would have much bargaining power.
One to keep in mind for later though.

RFD has 100,000 members - think you can partner up to offer more value to both forums? :D
