Suggested Upgrade Options:

If you put in an SSD and upsize the memory to 8GB, it flies. Hard drive caddy can be had for under $10 from eBay, so that you could swap out the dvd rom and swap in the original HD (housed inside the caddy) as the second laptop drive e.g. as a data volume for documents/pictures/music folders etc.

This Kingston 120GB SSD is a high-end model. It both reads and writes at 500Mbps (much faster than a HD) and can be a suitable candidate for an SSD upgrade on the T420. Priced at $68. Canada Computers now has online stock.

That thread (see below) was dealing with Labour Day Sale has expired.

Thanks for the update. I was on the fence about this since I just recently bought the Dell Inspiron 15 i3543-2501BLK Signature Edition Laptop from Microsoft (still have option to return)

This computer is for my mom. Do you think I should return it and get the T20 along with an SSD?

Bauer Systems is selling T420's for $243. I bought my T430s from them for a really good price and shipping came out to $15 (free if you picked it up @ Burlington). Received my laptop in 2 days. One downfall is that it states that Windows is not preloaded but I received my with Windows already installed. 45 days Warranty vs 1 year from Refurb. If your interested in other Laptops from Lenovo, keep an eye on their spreadsheet. They update it frequently. Another big plus is that they can install SSD (refurb) if you wish to add it on for a really decent price.

I have a T410 from 5 years ago and I did what OP said (SSD swap), it is still going strong after an average of 5 hours use every day.. the battery could be an issue tho. But if your mom wont be carrying it around, it should be a good basic computer for daily use.

I made the order over the phone. If you plan on buying/need questions about a laptop, do the same. I asked a bunch of questions because I was iffy about the company since there was no reviews online. I talked to a individual by the name of Mohit. I asked about the shipping cost as I originally had plans for my coworker to pick it up for me since she lived close by. It was $15 bucks so I just told them to ship it.

"COAs AFFIXED TO MACHINES ARE NO GUARANTEE OF OS ACCESSIBILITY, EXCEPT MAR"

It's cheaper for a reason, not a brand new windows license which they charge $38 for which you stated but didn't mention the $38. So they state they can't guarantee that you can use the OS, which sounds reassuring. OP's deal includes window's new license which bridges the price gap and the 1 year warranty is extra on top.

That being said, after browsing the list there are other models which have really good pricing that are quite interesting like the ultrabook. Just not the T420 in comparison

Just a reminder that t420 has a msata slot. So you don't have to take out the dvd drive to get ssd in

Yup... there was a big thread, but I wasn't planning to update it. Usually threads like that get buried in the forum, and only a select few see the new deals. It makes more sense to expire that thread, since the sale is over, and start a new one when a new sale occurs.

I rocked a T420 for the last few years until work forced me to replace it with this T450S.

Other posters are right, this is a great little laptop, but with a really slow HDD (seemed like 4200RPM). With an SSD and optional memory upgrade, the T420 is a decent beast.
