Cameras at Dollarama Self-Checkouts
Has anyone seen these newly installed cameras at self-checkout kiosks at Dollarama? I presumed that these are for theft protection, but the cameras are quite intrusive as they are up close so the customers' faces are visible. Don't see any monitoring policy about this on the Dollarama website. Aside from privacy reasons, I can't imagine that this is good public relations treating all customers as potential thieves to guard against. In the stores in my areas, there is already a staff guarding all of the kiosks full time to prevent theft and to assist customers having difficulties using the self-checkout.
I remember Eaton Centre tried using cameras in its info booth to gather customer info using facial recognition and stopped this practice soon after due to public outcry. Don't think Dollarama will be doing this to survey its customer base, but it would not be hard to implement this using those cameras.
Does this practice exist elsewhere with other stores also using self-checkout kiosks, like Canadian Tire, Walmart, SDM, Dollar Tree, etc?
Edited: x1 to add info about Eaton Centre
