Can I get into a top STEM university with an 80% in English?

I want to go to one of the top schools in the province for mechatronic or software engineering. Right now I'm averaging around 96 in every course (sciences and math) except English, where I currently have an 81%. The teacher is horrible and I do not think I can do much better than I am right now. Will this hurt my opportunities for university, and is it worth dropping the course and taking it in summer school?

Good luck! My son’s classmate had average of 96% (including English), he did not get into his choice program at his choice university .

Just apply, don’t let that stop you, where do you want to study? If you can’t get in directly, then get in via backdoor around it. Smiling Face With Sunglasses

Could you clarify via backdoor around it?

Look around other programs that can bridge back to the program.

My wife’s niece went to and graduated as DR but her high school average was not high enough (actually she struggled in HS, low 70%). Nobody thought she is a DR. She went to program in university but later she managed to bridge to medical school.

I am not saying every program can be done, but possible on some.

It could, but it may not. Universities are not unaware that some schools tend to award higher grades. Also, some programs are looking for more than grades, say you apply to Engineering Science at UT or Systems Design at Waterloo - the undisputed top of the top engineering programs in Ontario (at least from a decade ago).

Truth. I know a former classmate who was top of the top with excellent MCAT scores and yet couldn't get into med school, ended up going across the border (and unfortunately for our healthcare system, he stayed there).

Grades are not everything, as cliché as it sounds. They are only one part, then there is who you know/who knows your family, when you apply, how many people applied, and just luck of the draw to some extent.

Grades are important, to get in your choice university/program.

Haha, talking about get med school. My house mate, he had high 90s average for his grade 13 (yes, long time ago, say 37 years ago), he got in his choice university. He had very good score MCAT and grades. However he failed his interview twice, he could not get into med school. He ended up getting 2 master degrees. He is working in IT. Irony hah.

I have a friend who graduated High School 3rd in the class with mid-90s. She did well in a pre vet med program. But she couldn't get past the vet med interviews; vet med is super competitive.

She now has a PhD in Animal Sciences (after getting a BSc and MSc in the same subject), focusing on molecular genetics. Her first job included teaching genetics to vet med students (yup...), and now she is a lead scientist on the Dog Genome Project at the National Human Genome Research Institute in the US. It might not be what she wanted to do initially, but the pivot kept her firmly in her area of interest.

Good ending for her! Good example story for her students! Good for her!

Wonder, does she ever wondered what happened if she passed the interview?
