Can someone tell me why shipping prices are so high right now?

Is it lack of ability to piggyback of passenger transport? Less goods being sold to subsidize shipping prices? Everything I’m looking at, whether it’s EBay from the US or AliExpress from China, has rates 2-3x higher (sometimes more) than they were pre-Covid. Part of me likes it in that I think the flow of cheap goods needs to be reduced. The other part of me wants knockoff movie posters for $2.50 with free shipping.
If it’s not at least 50% off is it really a deal?

Well for one thing there are still a lot of flights not happening
Less flights = less cargo space
Less cargo space = more expensive ... or ... longer timeframes

Except for the big guys who own their own huge cargo planes (FedEx, Purolator, UPS etc)
Everyone else has to buy available cargo space on planes that are flying regular passenger routes
(Including space bought by the Postal Service ... like Canada Post)

Less planes flying = less cargo space

A lot of stuff in North America as a consequence is moving around by surface / ground / truck these days
And a lot of stuff from overseas has literally been on “a slow boat from China”

You want it quicker than 3 weeks ... or a few months time
Then you are gonna pay top dollar so it moves on what planes are flying
As companies compete for the little space there is for sale
Demand up, product availability down ... drives up the price even if it is just cargo space

Shipping companies also need to reduce staff on site sorting - longer dwell time = more costs
