My corsair psu died last month, they don't last more than 8-10 years that's why the warranty is only 10 years. Replaced with an evga 1000w

Wouldn’t you want to replace every 8-10 years anyway. Chances are standards or requirements have changed over that time. Like when we went from molex to sata power, or from 4 pin to 8 pin for the cpu.
Hello I.T.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

Back in "the day" we calculated a 10% loss in efficiency (and/or effective power O/P ) for every year of service. I suspect improvements in PSU quality over the years has affected that calculation, but for sure 10 yrs on a PC power supply is a point where a person should probably consider buying a new PSU in order to protect their hardware.

Same with mine, bought in 2009 and used daily, died in 2018. Lasted 2 builds, time for a new PC anyway since GPUs and mobos take 8 pin connectors now.

When you guys say your PSU dies, what are you referring to? The power supply doesn't turn on?

Usually yes, or system becomes unstable with blue screens, etc.

When the pc just turned off by itself w/o any user input, that's usually a telltale sign.

In my case my power supply started to hiss and there was an odd smell, I powered down my computer and found it was coming from the psu. Tried to start it after I disconnected it with just a fan hooked up, and it hissed, emitted a small puff of white smoke and shut off permanently.

Other times I've seen dying psus just crash the computer or turn off randomly, or after x minutes of runtime, or while running the CPU or GPU at load.

A good way to check is to monitor the voltages through your bios or through an app while running the computer, if any of the rails start dipping out of spec you have a bad psu.

Holy crap that sounds like a fire hazard. PSU standards are much higher and better now, there should be less issues with a longer life. I've never had a PSU fail on me yet.

Well, keep in mind this was a PSU that survived 2 builds, used every day, and was subject to some moderate gaming. It was a CX400 based on the Seasonic S12II, solid quality at the time. From what I've seen, most folks don't hold on to their hardware long enough for it to be an issue, it seems the PSU follows the case when the machine is scrapped. That said, a PSU can also die anytime regardless of age/usage, just like any other mass-produced electronic.

The most violent PSU death I've experienced was on an old computer in 2003 or so, I was browsing in the basement with the lights out when the power supply went POP, power went out and there was a steady stream of smoke coming out the back, like a cigarette but with a burning electronics smell. Unhooked the computer, and ran with it to put it outside fearing it was on fire. Opened the case to air it out, replaced the power supply with a spare, and everything kept working.
