Face shields are intended to protect against a very close sneeze or cough in your direction.

This is a respiratory virus. Prioritize getting N95 respirators or settle for surgical masks.
Except with the shortage of N95 pretty much world wide, they shouldn't be sold anywhere anymore given hospitals really do need them and are forced to re use them now.

Some 3D printed mask are actually better than surgical masks so it can be a good option depending on the design you use and rather or not you are willing to cut out filters.

N95 and KN95 respirators are expensive, but available for sale. If hospitals really want to buy them, I'm sure the store has no problem prioritizing them.

While US FDA has approved KN95 for use due to lack of N95, they really aren't the same. I have seen the odd N95 for sale @ $10+ but from what the news have being saying, not all n95 are the same either. Medical grade N95 (the ones hospital needs) are generally not in stock. The ones in stock are the non-medical (also known as surgical) grade N95.

Wearing a mask prevents you from infecting someone else so if everyone wears a mask everyone is protected which is why airports are now requiring them. The only thing that protects you are limiting close social contacts to the strict minimum and follow the two meters rule. The problem is that when you feel safer you are more likely to not follow the rules.
