are desktop parts more expensive than laptops nowadays? looks like you could get a laptop with similar spec for that price and you get a display, speakers, webam etc thrown in for free.

Pretty mediocre deal considering you can probably find better parts for roughly the same price.

Here's a similar build in cost as parts, thought the components will probably be a lot better than what the Acer desktop has to offer.

(Larger 250GB, instead of 128gb in Acer)

Tradeoff is obviously the OS license, and requiring assembly?
Warranty on the components are probably better than the refurbished warranty on the Acer though

Aside from stuff like that Walmart deal where you can get a desktop for significantly less than individual parts or if you don't want to assemble a PC by yourself, I don't think going for these systems is a great idea. Poring over hours reading up, finding the best deals and narrowing down the exact components you want and then assembling that is a huge part of owning a desktop afacit.

I like how the label the 7th generation CPU as 'new'. Those guys are so behind.

Just because laptop parts are named similar to desktop parts doesn't mean they perform the same. a desktop 7700/7700k will smoke the crap out of a mobile 7700hq. Same with videocards, although the gap has closed somewhat in recent years. In some cases you will see a full desktop videocard in a loptop, but that is quite rare.

Desktop 7700 + 1060 3gb probably is 10-30% faster than a laptop 7700hq + 1060maq-Q 6gb. Couldn't find a direct comparison but I am inferring it from the results on notebookcheck and userbenchmarks. However, to me key aspect is that a game that is unplayable on the laptop is not going to much better even with a 30% boost.

Again, this is nowhere near a like to like comparison but the last time I assembled a desktop the equivalent spec/named laptop cost almost twice as much. In the ideal world that exists only inside my head, this desktop config costs around $700 :D
