Hi there,

Well, NAS has 3 years, Blue has 2 years warranty. The spec are the same (though Red suppose to be noisier), but can Red be use as a just a regular hard drive?

We've had a shuckable Seagate 8TB SMR drive go on sale for less than $130, so I don't know if it's really worth wasting a SATA port on such a relatively small drive in 2022.

The only thing I'm taking from this thread is that Canada Computers bought "cc.ca" as a domain name. That's good to know.

5400 rpm?

weren't these green drives at one point? I distinctly remember "blue" drives being 7200 rpm.

Looking at getting a 4tb to put in my Synology strictly for surveillance recordings. I know CMR is better, but does it make a huge difference for my application? I have dual 8tb CMR for the rest

I use an SMR external WD drive for my media server. Been using it for more than 6 months now to stream 4K HDR videos to my TV with no issues. For your application I doubt it would be a big deal.

I bought an 8TB SMR thinking it would be fine for mass cold storage backup. I did no running of apps on the drive, but did have to do large copy of files to the drive.

Write speed became horrific. I don't know if my drive is defective but if I recall correctly it was south of 5MB/s after a long copy.

Be mindful that SMR has really limited use cases and a few dollars more for CMR is usually good value.

It's 83.99$, but save an extra 5$ with coupon CPHD00000371, so it comes down to 78.99$. It's also SMR.

WD spec sheet for the Reds show 2 versions of the 4TB:

WD40EFAX --> SMR
WD40EFRX --> CMR

The one at CC is SMR. I would not use it in a NAS. Any other opinion?
