Canada Customs at the U.S. border

Is it frowned upon by Canada Customs if Canadians just go across the border to get gas for their car and say so when asked for their reason for travel? Can the border agent ask you to pay duties on the gas that you put in your car?

Not that it is frown upon, they may just look at you weird that you have that much time in your hand to drive, wait in line (both ends) to save a few bucks. Not sure how much you will be charged for duties, HST should be 5%.

Pretty customary for border town residents. However, if you aren't from the border town, they might use it as an excuse to inspect your vehicle, phone and whatnot. Watch out for forgotten food, weapons and cannabis.

The math makes less sense where there is a toll bridge.

Prices listed per liter at this Madawaska, Maine, gas station:

Toronto is a very small part of Canada

It could be viewed as suspicious because most people don't live 15 seconds away from a border crossing.
Why are you taking at least 30 minutes to go to the US JUST for fuel? Is there something you're hiding?
If you tack on package pickup and/or groceries it would probably be viewed as less suspicious.

In your car? No.
In a jerry can? Yes.
Do you not have anything else to do rather than argue with strangers on the internet
Nope. That's why I'm on the internet arguing with strangers. If I had anything better to do I'd probably be doing it.

As a border town resident, I've never gotten any scrutiny from customs. In fact, one of the customs agents yelled "k bye" to me after I said I crossed the border to fill up my tank.
However, I only go when there's at least a 35 cents/litre difference

Do it all the time, no concerns with that.

I have to fill up 91 in my car and given Vancouver gas prices I often go across (I have my Nexus) and have never been scrutinized. Sometimes save upwards of 20$ per fill up.

With nexus do you have to declare the tank of gas when returning to Canada?
BTW agree that you can save close to C$20 (even for 87) at today's prices and fx.

I go across with my Nexus every 2 weeks and on the way back, I just say I went to "get some gas". 99% of the time I've never gotten additional questions from the border guard.

I just always say I got a tank of gas and I'm out of there within 30 seconds or less. Nexus really makes everything so convenient!

No worst than waiting in line for gas at Costco. Almost feels like a border crossing at certain times.
