[Canadian Tire] Champion portable 3550W generator

Good basic portable generator if you need one, whether as emergency backup for home, cottage, or DIY construction off-grid.
1/3 off Canadian Tire's "list price" of $700, though you can find it or similar elsewhere for $500.

Qs to ask before buying:

1. Is this the right size for your needs (at 4450/3550W it can run a bunch of appliances in a pinch, but not the whole house; or one DIY power tool that maxes out a 20A circuit)? There are smaller (not on sale) and bigger (slightly on sale) models.

2. Do you need features this basic generator is missing, like dual fuel (gas/propane...this one is only gas) or electric start? Or an inverter model?

3. The Champion brand has decent reviews, but do you need -- and are willing to pay for -- the extra reliability and longevity of e.g. a Honda?

Also this week, Lowe's has the equivalent Firman model on sale at $400. https://www.lowes.ca/product/portable-g ... ine-819319
Ditto Rona though YMMV.

Same specs and build quality as the Champion, it seems, i.e. works fine for occasional use, sometimes get a poorly-constructed lemon out of the box, not as reliable as e.g. a Honda. I've anecdotally heard more concerns about customer service response and longevity with Firman, so happy to spend the extra $30, but it's another option.

Q's to ask before buying:

4. Does anybody live within 1/4mi of where you will run the generator? Lepers have more friends than open frame generator operators. Face With Tears Of Joy

:) I think open frame generator operators turn out to have lots of friends...who don't have any generators and want to mooch. :)

Seriously, good add and no you don't want to run this for days on your back porch. Your neighbors will hate you, your spouse will bring up your misdemeanors from 11 years ago, and your cat will be even meaner than usual. (Your kids won't notice through their headphones.)

But when you have a 8 hour power outage at home at Xmas, a storm drops a tree branch on your Hydro branch line at the cottage, or you need to run your table saw, paint sprayer, or loud-as-heck-already air tool compressor off-grid, it's good enough.
