[Canadian Tire] Hot water heater: Moffat 3000 Watt / 240 V 182-L Top-Entry Electric Water Heater $549.99 discount of $150

If you are looking for a conventional electrically operated hot water heater this is the best price I have seen in the last year. Our insurance company wanted us to replace our 12 year old tank to continue insurance coverage against leakage. They were reasonable and gave us a year to do so.

I began watching for sales about a year ago. The non sale prices were $650 - $699 with Canadian Tire occasionally selling at $599. This is the first time I have seen the price this low. Perhaps others can get better deals, but I have no connections in the plumbing business.

Anyway this is a basic tank. 3000 watts @ 240 volts AC with top and bottom elements and a six year warranty. I have seen these under the name of GSW, Moffat as well as others. I think they are all made in the USA at the same factory. Sale price is good until Thursday, Feb. 2, 2023.

Happy plumbing.

These are the cheapest quality you can buy and when they go they go bad really fast. Buy something better and skip the mess that this one will make.

I got one for a neighbour on June 30 2022. It was on sale for $550 (regular price was $650). They had raised the price $50 after that sale. Note that you can save a little more if you use rakuten and any special canadian tire personal offers on their app.

It’s all about rod length, no?

Not really a deal, IMO. Typical CT "sale" pricing.
Rona only carried the Giant brand which seems to have had bad reviews in the last few years. I have had neighbours with Giant hw that have lasted at least 15 to 17 years. That GSW wasn't available at Rona last summer. I agree about the typical CT sale pricing.

I was just reading recent reviews about Giant. I have used them for several years, across several properties. The last time I needed to change one was in 2019, because it was over 10 years old and my insurer wouldn't insure me. I've had nothing but good experiences with them. It looks like they've had some quality issues for the past couple of years, though. It's a shame as I quite liked that they were well-priced, good quality, and locally made.

I'm changing my 24 years old Giant soon.

Not because there's a problem, but because it's time.

It's not about the length of the rod but how you use it

Highly recommend bringing the HWT area up to code (or better!) when replacing a tank. Even if a high quality tank.

What tank would have the best warranty?
6 years isn't much.

Get the Giant Super 8 ... It has 10 years warranty and quality is way different then what Rona sell you. Call a place like Wolseley and get a quote. They deliver and you install. If not get a plumber to do it.

Just replaced a 40 year old gas water heater. Don’t make them like they used to.

Not being "smart", but I'm wondering what you mean. What is "it" (the rod or the hot water heater) and what is the best way to use it? I'd like my heaters to last as long as possible.

What electric heater do you recommend?

Mine is over 12 years old. May be time to replace it.

Just a FYI which surprised even me. I also needed to change my 10 year old electric hot water 40 gallon due to insurance last year. In Quebec "Patrick Morin" hardware store ran a 30% off single item Cyber Monday online order only deal. The GSW top entry electric water heater 40 gallon was applicable and went from $569 to $398 + free shipping.
So plan ahead if you have to change by end this year wait for Cyber Monday. YMMV as they might or might not run the promo or exclude hotwater tanks. Time will tell.

My current water heater is a Rheem from 2015. It's been a while and I can't believe it has been that old and coming up for replacement soon. That's generally an insurance requirement more than a problem with the water heater itself when used in a domestic environment than a commercial environment. If you're a heavy hot water user, it's going to put more wear and tear on the water heater as it must run constantly to keep the water heated.

Talking about good water heaters of long service life, I had a co-worker who moved into a new house and found out the hard way about water heater size. The last owners specifically listed a brand new water heater as a selling feature to entice new buyers that they don't have to worry about a new water heater for the next 5 to 10 years. After they moved in, my co-worker found he had to endure midway cold showers every morning after his wife is done showering. It turned out that the last owners cheaped out majorly and bought the barely minimum water heater that worked if you had a single person living there. Any more people beyond the single person would require the water heater to be running constantly to keep up and in the case cannot keep up and would run out of hot water halfway through my co-worker's shower. Every. morning. So they had to go shop for a new water heater shortly after moving in which is another extra expense.

This is another expensive lesson of buy nice or buy twice. Water heaters are essential in Canada, and is something you cannot cut back on aggressively, but pay the price dearly shortly down the road. And if it leaks inside your home, that's a lot of hot water to mop up! There is a generally a good middle ground and deals to be had if you keep your eyes peeled for once-in-a-lifetime deals that come and go.

I have seen this Moffat water heater go on sale from time to time at CT. What other water heater brands do you recommend since I'll be on the market for a replacement soon? I'm thinking about staying with a Rheem since it has been trouble-free (knock on wood) so far and is quietly doing its job of keeping the house supplied with hot water on a constant basis. The thing I noticed about the Rheem I have is the lack of an anode rod. Or at least one I cannot easily identify by looking at the top of the unit. However, the tank is glass lined -- or so I'm told.

Why settle for full retail price when you can wait and get it at a lower price for better value (even better if there's a bundled freebies deal)? 😉
