Canadian Tire - iTunes Gift Cards

Hello All,

I'm new here, so pardon me if this isn't in the proper section.

I'm inquiring about the various third party gift cards that are sold at Canadian Tire - in particular, the iTunes gift cards they sell. I have a Canadian Tire Options World Mastercard (the Black, invite only version of their popular Options Mastercard), and have thousands of dollars of Canadian Tire Money built up on my account. Every single time I make a purchase at Canadian Tire with my card, they ask me if I'd like to use my money on the card to pay for the purchase. Every time, I say no, as I'm saving for big ticket items... which they seem to try and prevent me from doing every time I buy something, lol.

However, I'd like to make one exception: I want to grab a few iTunes gift cards and use my CT Money on my Credit Card. Does anyone know if they allow you to redeem points on purchases of third party gift cards, or do they have some silly and ridiculous restriction? I had trouble finding the answer definitively.

Thanks for any assistance you can provide!

Cheers

What did they say when you asked at the store when you were going though the checkout? Seems to me that you shop there often enough you could get an answer fairly quickly.

Of course I'm assuming you already know this so I'm writing it as a public service for others: If youve been asked by someone calling to represent the Tax Office, police or any other authority and they're saying you can pay an outstandng fine or debt eith iTunes gift cards, it is a scam. Such authorities do not accept this as a form of payment. Ever.

I’m not sure if you’re making an accusation that I’m in some way trying to purchase these as part of the ridiculous income tax scams asking folks to pay with iTunes gift cards or not, but I’m in fact asking for my own personal reasons and curiosity at the moment as a genuine question. Indeed I will try going today to see if this works, it just seemed like you were a bit hostile in your message.

This shouldn’t need saying, but no, this has nothing to do with said CRA scams. Anyone trying to pay back taxes with a gift card of any kind is honestly of questionable intelligence, and those that prey on them are scumbags. I’m sorry if this is the conclusion I led you to in asking my question (thinking I was falling victim to or preying on others.).

Hmm...apparently you missed the part where I said (as the very first sentence of the paragraph to make it even more obvious) ...Of course I'm assuming you already know this so I'm writing it as a public service for others:

Never said it wasn't a genuine question.
Indeed I will try going today to see if this works, it just seemed like you were a bit hostile in your message.
Especially considering the fact that I opened up the statement with a comment that I was assuming it wasn't the case with you, I think you're trying a little too hard to find something that wasn't there to begin with.
This shouldn’t need saying, but no, this has nothing to do with said CRA scams.

Already figured that, and said accordingly :)

Agree completely. However, it happens. Sometimes people you expect to be quite smart fall victim to scams. And that, my friend, is the only reason I included the little warning to my response, so that if anyone sees it who was about to go buy iTunes cards (or whatever) to pay for some debt, they would hopefully see that it is a scam.

Without seeing any stats, I am going to assume the ones that are hit the most are the elderly who don't know what itunes or Steam (I have seen Steam cards used in this scam) are and paid out.

If you need iTunes gift cards, go buy them at Costco. You can save up to 20% when they’re on sale.

Regular discount is 10%

At most Retailers you have to buy GCs with cash / credit card
And not Loyalty Program Points... as there have been too many scams involving GCs
Based on past GC promos at CT, I believe this to be their strict rules as well

I see you are new to RFD... so Welcome
To be honest although this is a huge online community
There are still probably 100 or so regulars
Most are well meaning & helpful to newbies
I would certainly count @ALLCAPS in that list

I honestly believe his post was well intentioned
And he did preface it by giv8ng you the benefit of the doubt

Of course I'm assuming you already know this so I'm writing it as a public service for others:

Of course you are a newbie... so you would not necessarily know all this about @ALLCAPS or the RFD Community
Just like we don’t know you

Hence the caution... just incase you did not know

Honestly you would be shocked by the content we see by some first time posters... people post about / fall for scams all the time
Stuff like:
I just ordered a $ 1000 thingamajigg fior $ 100 off of Website cheep4u ... and now i’m worried
I gave them my Credit Card and all my personal info but they did send me a RESEAPT should I be worried ?

You posted about iTune Cards... they have been the centre of many scams / illegal activities of late
@ALLCAPS did the RIGHT THING posting his wee blurb, as he said, if not for you... then to save someone else hopefully

It is what it ... a Public Service Announcement

PS... hope you’ll see it as such, and stick around, like I said, great community

Anybody who falls for someone on the phone asking for iTunes gift cards deserves to be ripped off. That is next-level idiocy.

Well aren’t you empathetic

Nice way to blame the victim

NEWS FLASH ... it happens mostly to older / elderly people who aren’t so familiar with new technology and scams. Guess what, we are all getting older every day. Someday you’ll be old too, if you’re lucky. And you might not be as “smart” as you think you are currently... This crap happens to good people all the time... could be your Parents or even yourself in the years to come as there will always be a new scam, and plenty of scammers looking to take advantage... has been this way throughout history, bad people target the most vulnerable. It’s our job as a society to look out for them, protect them... not vilify them
Wake up... karma she’s a b!tch
