[Canadian Tire] Royal Purple Synthetic Oil 5W30 + more grades not shown $46.39

Got a notification email from CT saying they are having a sale on Royal Purple Engine oil from 12/15/2017 - 12/21/2017. Picture on the flyer shows 5W30 but other grades could also be having the sale.

These are the 4.73L jugs

The question that's going through my mind, is this stuff really worth it. I have always gotten Pennzoil or Quaker state synthetic for $30 ($20 on rebate) and have never had an engine fail on me.

With no other facts than my own opinion, no; this stuff is not worth the premium over the Penzoil deal.

Agree, not worth it over Penzoil, or Mobil 1/Castrol/Motorcraft F1 on sale for under $30.

I've always thought the same and what my friend told me makes a lot of sense: if you have a fancy street racing car, probably yes, but if you have an average everyday work/leisure car, then save your money and buy something nice :)

Agreed. If you are pushing your car to its limits all the time, then Royal Purple would be great.

Another thing to keep in mind is that even though RP may be a great oil, it may not be warranty-approved for some cars (e.g. at one time it was not on the GM-approved list, this may have changed). If this is important to you, always check that whatever oil you are using meets your car manufacturer's specs (it will be in the owner's manual) so that the dealer can't use this against you in a claim. Oil specs go beyond just the viscosity (i.e. 5w30). Not being approved by a manufacturer doesn't necessarily mean the oil fails the tests - it's possible the oil manufacturer never bothered to submit their oil for testing.
I'm not an oil expert sharing my opinions ... I'm just stating facts and not interested in starting an oil argument.

CT has it on sale right now according to their flier. 32.xx.

I find flipp to be very useful when looking for weekly deals.

It's all marketing. Really, is purple dye doing anything for your engine?

I haven't seen anything to show that RP is any better than German Castrol or Mobil 1. If you have a car with specific requirements like BMW LL-01 then use an approved oil. If you're tracking, you should probably use something like Redline, LiquiMoly, or Motul, etc. You're probably also going to go up in weight. Of course you'll use a lighter oil in the winter.
https://bobistheoilguy.com/ is the place to go if you really want to get into it. Otherwise RP is a waste of money in a DD car. Motomaster F1 synthetic made by Shell is a fine choice for DD.
