Looks like a good buy for a basic no-frills gas mower, if you're not ready to go battery-powered electric. This will have about double the power of an electric mower that sells for hundreds of dollars more.

This one has a decent Briggs&Stratton engine. You can get cheaper gas mowers with smaller cheaper-brand engines, but the savings aren't worth it,

Brave posting a gas powered tool deal on RFD lately. You'll be downvoted a lot, but you're not wrong. A lot of people living in a 5th of an acre semi in Toronto that'll say just go electric, but even on my 1/4 acre, after a manual reel, Worx 40v, and Toro 60v, I just bought a gas mower last year to actually get the job done right and on one charge (one fill-up now I suppose). The technology just isn't there yet for people who have a decent sized lawn. Maybe in a few years, but for now get the gas mower and just buy an electric when you would've had to buy a new battery for the one you bought now for an extra $400 anyway.

As for Yardworks, not a bad name per se but not the greatest either. At least the motors are B&S but their quality has dropped significantly the past two years, i.e. B&S snowblowers were bottom of the lists for Consumer Reports this year with scores in the 60s. Personally I'd just buy a Toro from Home Depot or a Craftsman at Lowe's / Rona for the same price, but a deal's a deal and if people have had better luck with Yardworks than I have it's not horrible. I would (and did) personally go for the Honda engine as they've historically been more reliable from what I've seen.

Not gonna upvote or downvote, as it's not a bad deal but it's also not the greatest... CT is also notorious for overpricing their equipment so a "sale" seems like a better deal... Not really sure where I'm going with this. But good awareness if someone's interested I suppose.

There have been several threads here in Hot Deals over the past few months discussing deals on cordless electric mowers from Ryobi (Home Depot), Greenworks (direct), Kobalt (Lowes), and G-Force (CT). Read through those threads to get a better idea of what you're looking for. They use higher-voltage batteries in the 40v - 80v range, so it's unlikely you are already in such a battery system with other equipment.

This is probably going to devolve into a gas vs. electric, and a honda vs. B&S conversation. Some thoughts:

- The easier one to figure out is the Honda vs. B&S. Honda is a better engine, made to a tighter standard. This is however not a space shuttle, it's a lawnmower. It's likely that either engine would outlast the deck. I personally own a Honda because I'm particular like that, but if you're price sensitive the B&S is okay. I'd guess you'll get more than a decade out of either.

- Electric does not broadly have the power of gas, costs more up front and you have considerations around battery degradation and replacement over time which probably more than offsets the ongoing maintenance. But it's lighter, quieter, easier to use, more eco friendly and doesn't require as much maintenance (gas maintenance is really easy, but even a few minutes a year is a difference).

I was faced with the decision this year on gas vs battery after decades of gas use, and it was a no brainer. The battery powered ones will store upright and require no maintenance other than keeping the battery charged up and the blade sharp. By storing upright they will be much easier to clean as well. No more jerry can of gas, no more keeping oil on hand and no more winterizing (or forgetting to and using carb cleaner to start the next season). With the 40V lineups, you can easily do your entire yard in a single charge.

While the gas has more power, it's simply not needed in an urban setting unless you like to have your grass get super long.

In terms of battery life, when I think about how often I mow my lawn (15 times a year), a battery should have a fairly long life. While my phone battery might be on the higher side being rated for 500 charging cycles, even getting half that out of this battery would be almost a 15 year life.

With pricing and performance where it is, it is challenging to justify a noisy, smelly, and more pollution causing option like a gas mower. I won't dismiss those who choose it - to each their own. Especially because the upfront cost of gas can be cheaper (you can get them for $150-200 for the smaller 140CC engines). But for me, paying pretty much the same price ($320) and getting a battery option wins out. I think it will turn out to be a better product to use.

I bought Ryobi self propelled on Kijiji a couple of years ago and it does the job well. I can't say that I am wowed I also have a ton of other equipment from Ryobi 40v. A leaf blower, an expand-it drive which I recently bought with a snow shovel attachment and extra battery and charger for $100, an HR auger for installing poles, an HP chain saw. Batteries are dirt cheap with all the Ryobi clearance promotions and kijiji.

Not that cheap! The Ryobi 40v 6ah battery that comes with their current mowers costs $238 at HD, and the 3yr warranty suggests how long it will likely last. I'm doubtful about buying a battery from Kijiji or other sources where it might prove to be used, a refurb, or a clone. What's the cheapest you've seen it new on sale?

My old gas mower (similar to the one in this thread) is close to 30 years old, and while the deck is rusting out, it still easily outperforms my new Ryobi 40v mower, cutting faster and cleaner and handling thick grass with greater ease. Don't count gas mowers out yet.

The best one you can get from my research around April 2020 is EGO. It's a premium price/brand but I'm glad I went for it, it works just as well as a gas mower. I saved a bit of cash by going for the non self-propelled version.

Stocktrack shows it came on sale for $198 in May 2021.

I think what the poster was mentioning is when they have promos like buy a tool, get a battery or clearing out an older model of tool which comes with a battery. Ryobi often has a lot of these type of promos/clearance. On RFD, some people will buy the tool with promo battery, then return the tool so that the battery is at a promo price too.

This is tempting, but the yard works name scares me, even if it’s just referring to the chassis. If we go down the gas vs electric road, I’m a big fan of electric, however it’s just too expensive for me to justify a electric lawn mower, I’m personally on the Milwaukee platform for power tools, and 1000$ vs 200$ is a huge difference. Now while people complain about gas cans… we just got a Briggs and Stratton snow blower, so the gas will be used year round and it’ll never be a hour charge to get more gas….if you know what I mean.

I purchased this mower 2 years ago! It works great! 1 pull start every time! And the lever operated wheel adjustment system is brilliant!
